Where have all the lions gone? Establishing realistic baselines to assess decline and recovery of African lions
3.4 Current lion population connectivity Current, continent-wide lion populations occupied 13% of the maximum-historical range of the species, with only 9.9% of historical range currently constituting core connected habitat (Figure 3b).
Over 80% of Africa's savannah conservation land is failing or deteriorating according to lions as an indicator species
Abstract Calls to increase the global area under protection for conservation assume existing conservation areas are effective but, without adequate investment, they may not be. We collected survey data from expert respondents on perceived budgets, management, and threats for 516 protected areas and community conservation areas in savannah Africa to create a Conservation Area Performance Index.

A century of decline: Loss of genetic diversity in a southern African lion‐conservation stronghold
Abstract Aim There is a dearth of evidence that determines the genetic diversity of populations contained within present‐day protected areas compared with their historical state prior to large‐scale species declines, making inferences about a species’ conservation genetic status difficult to assess. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the use of historical specimens to assess the change in genetic diversity over a defined spatial area.
‘Skullduggery’: Lions Align and Their Mandibles Rock!
South Africa has legally exported substantial quantities of lion bones to Southeast Asia and China since 2008, apparently as part of the multinational trade substituting bones and body parts of other large cats for those of the tiger in wine and other health tonics. The legal sale of lion bones may mask an illegal trade, the size of which is only partially known.

Conservation or the moral high ground: Siding with Bentham or Kant
Effective conservation requires value judgements as well as science (Dickman et al. 2015). The furore over the killing of ‘Cecil’ the lion highlighted the complexities of such judgements. It demonstrated that some people view trophy hunting as morally wrong, and revealed public ignorance that it is a legal, widespread component of African wildlife management, protecting more land than National Parks (Di Minin et al. 2016).
Berkeley Journal of Sociology
While the 2012 re-election of America’s first African-American President signaled resurgence in support for social liberalism, it also announced a sea change in our media culture: the triumph of polling statisticians over the “go with your gut” prognostications of traditional punditry.
