What was your first job as a journalist?
Chief Strategy Officer at a Tech Publisher.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes typing lessons at school when I was 16 yoa. Very progressive initiative at the time.
How is social media changing news?
It is now key to all news stories and often the key way to get your news out there. Yep its all about Social Media.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Tara Moss author, doco maker and presenter, journalist and UNICEF national ambassador for child survival. I also sat with her on a flight.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
The reward of being informed, identifying and publishing cool stories. The people in publishing are much nicer than other sectors.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
SMS to confirm email of story has been sent to me. I don't like advertorials to be pitched to me as earned content.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Joomla, Lusha, Linkedin, Skype, Interspire, Cloudflare, Google Analytics, Google Console and Google Docs and now Muck Rake I suspect.
What's your favorite social network?
Linkedin in concert with Lusha.
Who do you wish followed you?
CIOs, CTOs, CSOs, IT Managers.
Why did you become a journalist?
I have been in Tech database practitioner, and as a Tech CEO. I always was interested in news and publishing and made the switch.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No but I was the Editor for the Sandringham Sailboard Club 150 members all champions.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Publishing stories. Vertiia Aerospace stories due to their low carbon aerospace solutions and aeromedical solutions.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Get to really know your Editor and their goals and challenges as a key stakeholder in your goals.
When's the best time to pitch you?
1:30am to 3:30pm
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Someone not requesting earned media and instead they know what's news and what's not. Also understanding the role and goals of the Publisher.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Promotional / advertorial content pitched to me as earned media. I don't or seek earned media that is an advertotia
What's your favorite drink?
RIVET Vietnamese beer and Gordons alcohol free gin
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On another computer. If not sailing, sailboarding or walking on the beach.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I enjoy reading all the main news sites each morning. I also enjoy all the tech news for major vendors. I always like reading anything.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That PR people who think the Publisher should work for free. I do like PR people, but I believe it should be a two way street.
