How Google Switzerland works for Israel
You can’t miss it as a rail passenger drawing into Zurich’s Central Station: The Google Cloud logo, with its familiar corporate design, is emblazoned across the glass-fronted façade of the office building, located near the railway tracks in the Europaallee district. It is a testament to just how important Zurich has become for the US tech company for developing large-scale computing capacities in the field of artificial intelligence.
Sirius Redevelopment by BVN
In 2018, as president of the New South Wales Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, I presented the state’s Enduring Architecture award to Tao Goffers as design architect for the Sirius Building. It was a deliberately political act.
The Boot Factory by Archer Office
Bondi Junction is one of those parts of Sydney where commercial development pressures have always outmanoeuvred urban design considerations. The streetscape is jarring and disjointed, though vital with commercial activity. It is not that Waverley Council has not tried to bring the beast under control – several strategies and reviews have been completed over the past ten years.

Generation exchange: Fees and procurement Original
Andrew Nimmo: With the widespread adoption of partial services and the ever-increasing list of specialist sub-consultants architects are required to work with, many architects have expressed concern that the role of the architect is being trimmed year on year. Is this something that concerns you? What actually defines an architect? Jon Clements: There’s a generational shift in the industry because the older-school architects were very attached to contract admin – but things have changed.
Sydney Metro Upgrade of Central Station by Woods Bagot and John McAslan and Partners
After many years of inaction, railway infrastructure in the Sydney basin is undergoing its largest building boom since the creation of the City Circle line from 1926 to 1956. Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project; by 2030, Sydney will have four metro lines, 46 new stations and a 113-kilometre standalone metro railway system.
A curated piece of utopia: Bundanon Art Museum and Bridge
Near Nowra in the Shoalhaven River valley of southern New South Wales, two properties – Riversdale and the adjoining Bundanon – were the home of artists Arthur and Yvonne Boyd. In 1993, the Boyds donated both sites, including their substantial art collection, to the Australian government and the Bundanon Trust was established.
Concrete artistry: The Surry
Off-form concrete has become Candalepas Associates’ signature. Usually smooth in finish, it is a brave move in a country like Australia, which is not known for the quality of its off-form work. Many – probably most – of the examples of smooth off-form that you see around town have been touched up with a skim coat or cement paint to hide the bubbles, blotches and other blemishes that are the hallmark of our local product. However, Candalepas Associates seems to have discovered how to get it right.
Revisited: Droga Apartment
When originally published in Houses back in 1998 (see issue 16), the Droga Apartment was presented with the headline “Zinc Slink.” There have been many articles written about this iconic project by Durbach Block Jaggers (then Durbach Block Architects), and most reviews have drawn on a range of analogies to capture its poetic expression: a sunning lizard, a slug, twisting bodies, a sleek cat, something with an uplifted head and scales, even a ship slicing through surf.
Setting the stage: New Academic Street
Study pods in the library’s student learning centre, designed by Harrison and White and located at the eastern end of Building 12. The project team’s approach to reinvigorating the existing 1970s buildings is respectful yet robust. Image: Peter Bennetts A new entrance laneway and stairs, designed by NMBW Architecture Studio, as viewed from Swanston Street. Linking of the two major streets delivers a much-needed permeability, which draws natural light and ventilation deep into the plan.
Sydney Opera House: Celebrating and protecting an Australian icon
Clare Cousins and Andrew Nimmo, respectively the national and NSW chapter presidents of the Australian Institute of Architects, jointly argue that the use of the Sydney Opera House as an advertising platform demonstrates a “complete disregard for the universal values of respect and dignity.” In a royal tour that is capturing countless hearts, it’s little surprise that the first major public engagement with adoring fans for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took place on the steps of the Sydney...
Touch wood: International House Sydney
This new commercial building in Barangaroo South, designed by Tzannes, celebrates the material, structural and aesthetic qualities of wood and sets a precedent for the use of engineered timber in Australia. In many respects International House Sydney (IHS) by Tzannes is a sensible commercial building.
