Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives Deliver a Night of Telecasters, Tradition and Cosmic Country in Turlock, CA (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS)
When you see Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives on a theater marquee, the name isn’t hyperbole. Less than a year after the band was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Marty and his guys rolled into Turlock, CA, to play the Community Theatre on a very warm Central Valley night on October 3, 2026. The venue is one of those places that drips with history and crackles with perfect acoustics.
The Good Luck Thriftstore Outfit Proves Time Can’t Dim Its Spirit on ‘The Trees At Last’ (ALBUM REVIEW)
By Over sixteen frickin’ years ago, we lamented the loss of one of the true, great Alt-Country bands of our time. It was back in mid-March, 2010 that The Good Luck Thriftstore Outfit pulled up to load into the Fillmore Auditorium to play, unbeknownst to many, their last set. While we’ve all heard bands we love say they are going on a hiatus, it’s always unsettling. Sometimes those hiatuses last only a few months, and sometimes we never hear from a band again.
From Ashes to Open Roads: Wolf Jett Finds Musical Freedom on ‘Letting Go’ (ALBUM REVIEW)
For all the adversity Wolf Jett has faced, they have earned the right to musically brood in their new releases. No one would blame them for putting out dark, moody jams that might make us listeners count our blessings and consider how lucky we are. When a 2020 wildfire wiped out the band’s newly minted studio and many of their instruments, they could have called it quits. But, nope, not Wolf Jett.
On 'Frames,' ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) Embrace Musical Mission For Greater Good (ALBUM REVIEW)
The release announcement came days following, perhaps, the most acrimonious presidential election in American history. Americans were at their most divided. But, here came ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) with their Frames announcement. Those of us who know this band had a chance to pause in the uncertainty and heave a sigh.
Piet Dalmolen's Solo Debut Fits California Musical Canon With Breezy Yet Thought Provoking 'Time Stands Still' (ALBUM REVIEW)
Piet Dalmolen has spent the past fifteen years gigging with other bands and playing covers. Sure, it was good to have the work, but these gigs did not feed a necessary creative fire and it’s been a long dry spell since he made his own music. That has now changed. Feeling inspired to dive back in, and with a wealth of new material, he picked his local dream team of musicians and watched it all fall into place. “I love my band for their talent, aesthetic, and easygoing personalities,” says Piet.
Wolf Jett Mix Contagious Blues Riffs & Rock Goodness On Intrepid 'Time Will Finally Come' (ALBUM REVIEW)
You can’t thow a stick these days without hitting a band that says they bend genres into a potent stew of original sound that sets them apart from everybody else. At this point, it’s almost cliche. BUT . . . Santa Cruz, California’s Wolf Jett smashes that cliche to bits with their masterful command of not just different styles but how they bring those styles of music together.
ALO Delivers Big-Time Performance At Santa Cruz' Cozy Moe's Alley (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS)
If there is one thing that you can hang your hat on, one thing in this world by which you can set your watch it is that ALO will ALWAYS deliver a solid performance. By rights, as they wheeled into Santa Cruz’s Moe’s Alley this past Friday, not only was it their 17th consecutive Tour d’Amour, but it was also the final leg of that tour. Over the past month, the band has threaded the needle through various weather issues and they had to have been tired.
Kareeta Cranks Up 70's Guitar Rock & Narrative Songwriting On Lively 'Freeway Junkie Quee' (ALBUM REVIEW)
Kareeta’s sophomore record, Freeway Junkie Queen is an album that anyone that listens and enjoys Widespread Panic needs to check out not because it sounds just like WSP but it certainly shares similar sensibilities. In fact, Dave Schools plays bass on the album and Jerry Joseph has a guest spot on backing vocals as well. Beyond that, the overall sound of the record drips of the Dirty South in a way that belies the band’s California roots (although they are from southern California).

Revisiting The Mother Hips Rockin' Arc With 'Back To The Grotto,' 'Part-Timer Goes Full', 'Shootout' - Glide Magazine
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Mother Hips, their label, Blue Rose Music, began rereleasing ten of the band's original albums on vinyl (one album per month). The Hips are currently working on a record of new material to be released at the end of the year as well as an undisclosed project to also be released at the end of 2021. It truly is a good year to be a Mother Hips' fan. Andrew Quist takes a dive into the first three rereleases . . . It's March.
Digging Deeper Into The Wood Brothers' Reissue Of 'The Muse' On Vinyl - Glide Magazine
The good news? The Wood Brothers have just reissued probably their best record, The Musein a 2 LP gatefold package and it is due for release on March 5th, 2021 from their own label, Honey Jar Records. The bad news? There is little surprise that due to its overwhelming popularity, this reissue sold out in just the pre-sale.
LISTEN: Elliott Ok Leaves Little To Imagination On Debut Single "Snap! (The End)" - Glide Magazine
Elliott Ok (Burning Pictures, Bobcat Rob and the Nightly Howl, Joe Kaplow) is a kid whose years on this planet belie his old soul vibe. Elliott is more than just a musician or music appreciator, he's a devotee. He listens to his influences deeply - deeper than a lot of the people around him. You hear it when he talks about bands like The Grateful Dead or The Band or musicians like Dylan. He doesn't just listen to these players, he studies them.
LISTEN: Greg Loiacono (Mother Hips) Bridges Grinding Rock & Psychedelia On Riveting New Single "Seed" - Glide Magazine
"We don't have a choice about being born. Parents who create us, school teachers that mold us, societies in general rely on a person to live in particular ways that jibe with cultural norms. And we just get thrown into it without a say and eventually become the ones who distribute the norms." - Greg Loiacono "Who AM I?" Perhaps the greatest rhetorical question of all. It is something that many of us have pondered in moments in which our minds are left to wander a plane that is much bigger than us.
Santa Cruz' Wolf Jett Overcomes Natural Adversity With "Garden of Pain" - Glide Magazine
It is hard for us all right now. Covid, hurricanes, tornadoes, and a grim political stage have all managed to change the face of America as we knew it. In California, we have endured an unprecedented (are you sick of that word?) fire season, experiencing the largest fires recorded in state history. Here in Santa Cruz, in early August, an unprecedented (there is that word again) lightning storm was sucked out of a mid-Pacific hurricane by a stifling heatwave and hit the west coast.
Craig MacArthur & The Casual Coalition Mold Terrapin Crossroads Musical Forces Into 'Rendering of A Ghost' LP - Glide Magazine
When he had a veritable "who's who" roster of some of the San Francisco Bay Area's best working musicians in his pocket. Over seven years of working at Grateful Dead bassist Craig MacArthur started the recording process of his band The Casual Coalition's new record, The Rendering Of A GhostPhil Lesh's Terrapin Crossroads as a house sound engineer and, later, talent booker, MacArthur had gained friendships with some great players (to say the least).
Reid Genauer Releases Intimate Title Track From Third Solo LP 'Angels and Alibis' - Glide Magazine
and later Assembly of Dust. Genauer today released the first single, Reid Genauer is best known for his standout storytelling, vocals, and lyrical work with Strangefolk Greg Loiacono"Angels and Alibis," (below) the title track from his third solo album. Considering his pedigree and even his previous solo efforts, listeners might expect more of that folk-rock sound with jam explorations on this new record. Those expectations would be wrong.
SONG PREMIERE: Greg Loiacono Gives Father's Day Themed Cover of Tom Rush's "Child Song" - Glide Magazine
The love that exists between a father and son defies description. Those of us blessed to have experienced that kind of love value it beyond measure. We find the definition of that love in a lifetime of moments, little points on our life's timeline.
SONG PREMIERE: Bobcat Rob and the Nightly Nail 60's Folk Pop On Catchy "Engineer" - Glide Magazine
Bobcat Rob and the Nightly Howl are premiering brand single from via Glide today titled "Engineer," from their yet unnamed record due for release in the fall of this year. The players on the single, a trio, led by Bobcat Rob Armenti, with Tyler Larson on bass and Joe Kaplow on drums, is centered around an old house in the Happy Valley area of Santa Cruz, California lovingly referred to as the "Ratz Carlton" for the occasional four-legged creatures it hosts.
SONG PREMIERE: Jordan Smart Sings Of Aiming To Catch Elusive John Prine Show Via "Song For Prine" - Glide Magazine
As of this writing we have now lived nearly two months in a world without John Prine. The day he died was a kick in the stomach, a perfectly placed gut punch in the midst of confusing days where, in 24 hours, Bernie dropped out of the 2020 presidential race and Prine breathed his last. The next day was dark, it left so many scratching their heads as they waded through tributes to John that filled their social media feeds.
FULL ALBUM PREMIERE: Greg Loiacono (Mother Hips) Shares Textured & Introspective LP 'Mystic Traces' - Glide Magazine
Greg Loiacono started writing the songs that would make up Mystic Traces a few years ago when he committed them to demos in his home. From there he traveled down the coast to his friend Scott Hirsch's studio in Ojai, California where together they would mold them into his latest release from Blue Rose Music, (officially set for release tomorrow, May 15) . Glide is thrilled to premiere the album in its entirety (below) prior to its Friday release.
On The Spot Trio (OTS) Returns With Funky Grooves on "Hefe" - Glide Magazine
I first saw On The Spot Trio (OTS) when I moved from the Sierra Foothills of California to Santa Cruz on the coast. My marriage had tanked, and I wasn't stoked. I spent days trying to figure out the next move. But I was in Santa Cruz, it could have been way worse. I connected with some friends and began the healing process and, ultimately, never left.
Live Streaming & Silver Linings: Music Communities Helping Us All Get By - Glide Magazine
Strange days, right? And they only seem to get stranger. Like we're all living in some kind of Jim Morrison song. You all, like me, are probably finding a lot of solace through music. By sheer luck, a couple weeks ago my cousin, who's property my wife and I live on in the mountains of Santa Cruz, CA, decided that we needed a turntable in the little 12×12 cabin we hang out in high up on a hill that has one of the finest mountain views in the county.
Green Leaf Rustlers Freewheel Through Golden Cosmic Country Greats on 'From Within Marin' (ALBUM REVIEW) - Glide Magazine
Sometime between 1965 and 1968 a shift in popular music happened. It wasn't something that necessarily defined the time but was more a symptom of it. The acid was taking hold, marijuana was a ubiquitous part of the hiplife and ears and minds were opening to sounds to which they had once been closed. While this was a period of crackling creativity, musicians looked to the American musical canon for inspiration that they could stir in their own sounds and stamp with their seal.

Vetiver Gets Intimate at Santa Cruz's Moe's Alley In Support of 'Up On High' (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS) - Glide Magazine
(((folkYeah!))) Presents brought Vetiver to Moe's Alley on Wednesday, November 6th in Santa Cruz, California. The Moe's show was an early tour stop as the band wends its way through a string of dates in the Western United States and then begin a large European tour that will take them well into the new year. The band is touring in support of the fantastic new record, Up on High.
SONG/VIDEO PREMIERE: Greg Loiacono Featuring Neal Casal Deliver Emotional "Chamberlain's Trunk" - Glide Magazine
Greg Loiacono's music has been more contemplative of late, it is paced and acoustic, evoking specific moods. And while they might be more subdued in sound and instrumentation, the lyrics hit hard and take the forefront in true singer/songwriter style. This new single, "Chamberlain's Trunk" ( Glide premiere below) is a case in point. The melodies intermingle with potent lyrics that deal with pain and release. Loiacono's life, like every life, has taken some real turns.
Lost Sierra Hoedown 2019: The Best Experiences Can't Ever Be Fully Articulated (FESTIVAL RECAP/PHOTOS) - Glide Magazine
Perhaps it gets to the point as a writer that you become too close to something, too wrapped up in the beauty of a thing that you cannot adequately, or objectively report on it? Sitting down and trying to review this year's installment of the Lost Sierra Hoedown has been nearly impossible. So much so that I asked some of the performers and attendees to help me out.
Robyn Hitchcock, Jonathan Richmond Join Up With The Mother Hips To Give Hipnic XI in Big Sur, California a Fresh Flavor - Glide Magazine
Here's the thing about Hipnic: It's NOT a music festival. Hipnic is a vibe and it's a vibe shared by everybody that makes the drive down (or up) to The Fernwood Resort smack in the center of Big Sur. It's a state of mind that needs to be refreshed, as a plant needs to be watered, once a year.
Greg Loiacono (Mother Hips) Shares New Video For "Close Your Eyes (We'll Be There Soon)" - Glide Magazine
On the very eve of his band The Mother Hips' annual Hipnic Festival (co-presented with FolkYeah Presents, this is year eleven for those keeping count), Greg Loiacono has released a video for his new single, "Close Your Eyes (We'll Be There Soon)." The song is in keeping with his last single release in its dream-like mood but this one encapsulates the experience that so many Hipnic attendees feel as they make their way to that magical portion of the California coast known as Big Sur.
Do It Ourselves Festival Does It Right In Boulder Creek. CA (FESTIVAL REVIEW/PHOTOS) - Glide Magazine
Somehow it seemed fitting that the headlines in national news carried the cancellation of the Woodstock 50 th Anniversary Festival the day following the Do It Ourselves Festival (DIO) in Boulder Creek, California. In a world where big festivals are increasingly monetizing the live music experience with tiers of attendance and general admission tickets running for $450.00, it's the little festivals that harken back to what is right the live music. DIO is the antidote of a big money festival.
Santa Cruz Singer Songwriter Joe Kaplow Releases Debut LP 'Time Spent In Between' With Record Release Party in Soquel, CA (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS) - Glide Magazine
Santa Cruz, California Folk singer, Joe Kaplow (pronounced like a firecracker goes "pow"), released his debut record, Time Spent In Between on Friday, April 12th and marked the occasion with an LP release party at Michael's On Main in Soquel, CA that very night. The record is a collection of folk songs that could easily find their roots in early 70's Neil Young and The Band.
Colter Wall Makes Musical Argument For Reincarnation at The Catlayst in Santa Cruz (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS) - Glide Magazine
There are nights when a song comes over your stereo that completely stops you from whatever task is at hand and forces you to listen and listen deeply. And then that song forces you down the rabbit hole to find more and once you find the records, your life is changed forever. Those are great and important moments. Colter Wall does that, he makes those moments and they're incredibly precious these days - especially in country music.
The Mother Hips' Musical Adventure Resumes At Santa Cruz's Moe's Alley New Years Run (SHOW REVIEWS/PHOTOS) - Glide Magazine
With dark eventually comes the light, right? To get to the good you must slog through the bad - it's almost cliché but everyone that reads this review knows that to be true. It is the one law of life that can keep us going and the last five years of The Mother Hips' history is proof.
Why Congress Suddenly Cares About Yemen
“One death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic.” This oft-cited quote, usually attributed to Joseph Stalin, conveys a harsh insight into what psychologists have described as a flawed “arithmetic of compassion”: When we assess the importance of large-scale humanitarian crises, the more people who die, the less we care.
Del McCoury Band Keeps A-Rollin' at Santa Cruz' Rio Theatre (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS)
To sit in the crowd at a Del McCoury Band show is to sit in the presence of a master of his genre. David Grisman called Del the finest rhythm guitar player in all of Bluegrass and Del has played with the greatest – the very father of the music, Bill Monroe, as one of his “Blue Grass Boys” initially, he thought, to be a banjo player but ultimately as a lead-singing rhythm-picking guitar player.
The Mother Hips Continue Offer Fierce & Anthemicaly Celebratory New LP 'Chorus' (ALBUM REVIEW)
The last three and a half years have been really tough for San Francisco’s Mother Hips. This band has weathered a series of setbacks that, short of the death of a band member (which was way too damn close in this case), would have stressed even the most storied and successful bands out there. When Tim Bluhm descended too quickly from southern California skies and crashed into a woodpile at high speed in a horrible speed flying accident, it was seriously “touch and go” for a while.
The Do It Ourselves Festival (DIO Fest) Continues To Shine Where All Others Don't (FESTIVAL RECAP/PHOTOS)) - Glide Magazine
The Do It Ourselves Festival (DIO Fest) has been covered here before but it begs a revisit. In fact, this truly singular and special event deserves an annual accounting if only for the genuine goodness it provides. DIO Fest is a special stoke. Some of this will sound like pretty flowery, hyperbolic hippie speak but bear with it, kind reader, because this is real – it happens every year and it happened again this year.
Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra Craft Their 'Sgt. Peppers' With 'Stereoscope' - Glide Magazine
Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra are probably not yet a blip on your radar screen. That should change. If you are the kind of music listener that likes to connect with your music and understand the importance of textured sound, then it is time for you to find these guys. Their new record Stereoscope is due for release on February 9th and some of us have had the opportunity to take some time to dig into and digest it.
Jordan Smart's 'Heart Of It All' Gives Listeners Pause (INTERVIEW) - Glide Magazine
The essence of folk music is the song and the song is made up of two basic components, lyrics and melody. Boiled down to the very elements it really is that simple a combination. By that logic though we should all be accomplished folk musicians, but we aren’t. Why? Because there is one other thing that makes a folk musician more than just a singer of songs and that’s heart.
The Inconvenient Truth about Smart Cities
This week, we learned that tech guru and mega philanthropist Bill Gates purchased 25,000 acres of land in Arizona with the intent to build a smart city from the ground up.
