What was your first job as a journalist?

Director, Arts Communication at Wesleyan University.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

So many ways - from sharing news stories, to having folks interact with content, to having the social media channel be an information source.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent or Ron Burgundy.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means gathering newsworthy information and accurately reporting that story to an audience.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google Drive, TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Voice Memos, Google Pinpoint and Journalist Studio.

Facebook or Twitter.

Why did you become a journalist?

I am part of the Strategic Communications team at Wesleyan University that generates content for the newsletter and magazine.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No. I played soccer, tennis, and track, and also started playing drums in garage bands.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Every story provides insight into how an artist, student, faculty, staff, or Wesleyan alumni view the world.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

The Certificate in Journalism and Newswriting program at New York University's School of Professional Studies has been very helpful.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Weekday afternoons.

What's your favorite drink?

White Russian, margarita, piña colada.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Hanging out with my wife and son, playing music or sports, taking a hike, going to the beach, or to a Phish concert.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Rolling Stone, Jazz Times, DownBeat, Modern Drummer, The New York Times, The AP Morning Wire, The Hartford Courant.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Art is more than performances or exhibitions - they are a way to share with others how we imagine the world could be.
