America need greener garbage and greater goals
Pollution is bad. That’s not a hot-take or an outlandish remark- that’s just a fact that we all agree on. It’s one of those rare issues in our modern political climate that is genuinely accepted by every party and can thus be a point of non-partisan cooperation towards global improvement. Pollution is also a rare example of something the government deserves genuine praise for.
The death penalty is cruel and unusual
Across the country, 21 states continue to administer the death penalty-or capital punishment-to its criminals, which critics say violate their protections from punishments that are either “cruel” or “unusual.” In the United States, the most common form of execution is lethal injection since it is seen as humane: even though it’s not. Typically, a prisoner, strapped to a chair, is first injected with an anesthetic drug. The point of the anesthetic drug is to prevent the prisoner from feeling pain.
Marijuana deserves federal legalization
Schedule II drugs are by the federal government as drugs that have a “high potential for abuse” and can lead to “severe psychological or physical dependence.” Such examples include cocaine, meth, marijana, OxyContin and pharmaceutical fentanyl. Actually, the truth is one of those drugs is classified as a Schedule I drug, which is considered even more dangerous and punished more seriously. No, it’s not cocaine or Oxycontin or even meth-it’s marijana.
Continued support for Ukraine urgent in face of Navalny death
In the arctic circle, isolated from the world, Alexei Navalny died in prison according to the Russian government reports. Navalny was the most infamous critic of President Vladimir Putin due to his exposure of the rampant corruption of the oligarchs, which led directly to his assassination. Now, unable to continue his campaign against the regime, the onus is upon the world to continue waging this fight against Putin’s authoritarian regime.
Melting pot
DGS has many students who do not speak English as their first language; this position presents many obstacles for these students who are juggling two cultures. This podcast explores some of the adversity that these students face, and how they have persevered to sustain their own language while learning a new one.
Social media codes our world for failure
Across the world, Generation Z is united by one overarching principle-apathy. A generation born into a world scarred from climate change, terrorism, the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression, a growing wealth gap, an opiate crisis and so much more, threw its hands up and walked away from it all. Today, these disasters are so baked into our mind that the thought of solving them is laughable.
DGS is terrified to raise expectations for students
After the COVID-19 pandemic subsided and students were able to reenter school, many thought the time lost during those years could be made-up for in the classroom while students fell back into old, better habits. Instead, a new pandemic of absenteeism quickly arose and proved contagious to every facet of school life.
Marriage equality must be the start, not the end
Over the last 20 years of American history no group has experienced such a monumental shift in public opinion like the queer community. This includes, but is not limited to, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, aromantic or pansexual.
American democracy is the crisis of our time
Thirty years ago the world experienced an incredible growth in the number of democracies globally. Political scientist Samuel Huntington dubbed this, “Democracy’s Third Wave,” which resulted in communist and fascist dictatorships collapsing from economic pressure, political instability and mounting resistance movements from within.
‘Leo’ is a movie everyone can enjoy
“Leo,” an animated musical comedy, is a wonderful nostalgia trip for many: recalling a simpler, more innocent, elementary school life. Directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim, the film was released on Nov. 21, 2023. While the cast is extensive, the most important characters are voice acted by Adam Sandler, Bill Burr and Cecily Strong. Throughout the movie, one follows the journey of Leo, a classroom pet lizard, as he discovers how to best spend the last year of your life.
Students are too apathetic about school violence
“Qui tacet consentire videtur,” an old Latin phrase, means roughly that those who are silent show consent. The proverb illustrates that someone needs to speak out against what they see as unacceptable or risk showing complacency; however, too often students allow themselves to remain silent despite their discontent. This erosion of young voices has led to a decline in voting, protesting and speaking out about issues young people care about most deeply.
DGS students register to vote despite challenges
With the 2024 general election being a year away, DGS students are preparing for the race by registering to vote. Registering online or in-person, students are ready to make their voices heard throughout their communities. But while some are eagerly preparing to vote, a significant group of students will not vote in next year’s general election. Younger voters are notorious for being an unlikely voting group.
