Efficient Machine Learning Optimization of Gear Microgeometry and Comparison With Manually Designed Gears Figure 1—Machine learning microgeometry optimizer (left) compared with a 100,000-sample Monte Carlo experiment over the optimization space (right). In both plots, the main text defines the transmission error target as the root-mean-square of the weighted sum of TE across both gear meshes.
In an age that was polarised between the sparkle of glam metal and the psychedelic shades of acid house, progressive rock made for a strange bedfellow. It was a movement that was the complete antithesis to the neon blues and pinks that illuminated the era; it is credit to the genre that it not only survived, but thrived, with many artists (most notably Marillion) becoming a fixture on the charts.
Contestation over a Profession's Memory: The UK Pharmacy Profession, 1880–1905
INTRODUCTION The established concept of collective memory proposes that it is not merely extracted from an information repository but rather re-created or reconstructed (Rowlinson et al., 2010).
Why it’s good to talk… even if it feels like no one’s listening
By Andrew Wild, head of legal practice at First4InjuryClaims I and other stakeholders came together last year to discuss our experiences of using the Official Injury Claim (OIC) portal, the service set up to help road traffic accident victims seek redress as part of the whiplash reforms. Hosted by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, the in-person roundtables for claimant and defendant representatives, plus other interested parties, provided plenty of food for thought. For the participants at least.

Golf: Wilmslow Juniors represent Cheshire
The 2021 Northern Counties Boys' Qualifying Championship was held at the Ilkley Golf Club on Wednesday 30 June. When Cheshire picked a team of 6 players to represent the County in this event against the other Northern Counties their team of 6 included 4 from Wilmslow. Which is exceedingly rare.

Bank Interview: Andrew Wild, HSBC
In today’s uncertain macroeconomic environment, companies have more reason than ever to focus on optimising working capital. At the same time, treasurers are increasingly focusing on centralisation structures such as in-house banks to achieve working capital improvements. HSBC’s Andrew Wild, Head of Commercial Banking Europe, Deputy CEO HSBC France, explains how companies are approaching these challenges – and what steps HSBC is taking to support customers in Europe in the current climate.
Goodbye, golden brick road
The first TV show I ever loved was “Lost,” so I’ve always had a strange relationship with endings. What most people considered to be poorly thought out, badly executed and a tribute to the creators only having an interest in pleasing themselves, I thought was unexpectedly brilliant. I imagine this is a pretty awful testimonial for my own farewell column, so if 90 percent of readers close out this tab following this paragraph, no hard feelings.
Running backs, linebackers shine brightest for Cal football in Spring Game
Fans who came to Cal football’s Spring Game on Saturday were greeted by a poster highlighting not one of the key defenders who led to the Bears to a top-10 defense in football last year, but a faceless silhouette. The point was stark: On offense, the moneymaking and attention-grabbing side of the ball, Cal has only question marks. The Spring Game provided some possible options but showed the team is still a while away from definitive answers.
All eyes on offense this weekend at Cal football Spring Game
The issues surrounding Cal football’s offense in the Justin Wilcox era became completely undeniable in the close of last year’s season and at the Cheez-It Bowl. The questions about how that was going to change in 2019 haven’t been answered yet, but Saturday’s Spring Game could go a long way toward providing some much-needed clarity. “Each and every position, you’re just looking for the next step in each player’s development and each position’s development,” Wilcox said.
Golden girl - Olds Albertan
Olds hockey player Hannah Mousek returned from the 2011 Canada Winter Games with a noticeably heavier set of luggage after striking gold as part of the province’s winning female hockey team. A 3-2 victory over Ontario in Saturday night’s gold medal game at the Halifax Metro Centre capped off a perfect tournament for the Wildrose province, finishing 7-0 over the course of the weeklong event. Mousek was part of the team’s defence corps that surrendered only five goals throughout the week.
Cheez-It Bowl Shuffle
Last time Cal football made news in the month of January, it was to announce a bizarrely timed firing and to announce the hiring of Justin Wilcox as head coach at the last moment. Two years later, the Bears have again released odd coaching news to start the year, but this time in what seems to be a desperate attempt to avoid firing anybody. I spent so much of last season trying to find stats that could explain just how stultifyingly unwatchable the 2018 offense was.

Offense fails to relieve stellar defense as Cal falls to Stanford in Big Game
So much had gone right for Cal football in 2018 that when Cal head coach Justin Wilcox’s defense put on one of its signature efforts in clamping down on Stanford and keeping the game close, it seemed like it had to be only a matter of time before the other side of the ball reciprocated and took a lead.
Student must become teacher — Wilcox to battle former mentor
Washington football head coach Chris Petersen still feels like the new kid in town for the Pac-12, coming in and transforming the Huskies into the cream of the conference crop. But in reality, Petersen has been a head coach for more than a decade, and his coaching tree has grown and grown, including planting serious roots at Cal.
Cal football notches first Pac-12 win since 2015 with 49-7 victory over OSU
The streak that had haunted Cal football for more than three years came to an end in undramatic fashion this weekend, with the Bears notching their first conference road win since September of 2015 in a 42-7 beatdown of Oregon State in Corvallis. Shutting down the Beavers above-average offense is an accomplishment on paper, but the Bears were able to do it in such blasé fashion that it felt like an inevitability right from the get-go.
Cal football notches 1st Pac-12 win since 2015 with 49-7 victory over OSU
The streak that had haunted Cal football for more than three years came to an end in undramatic fashion this weekend, with the Bears notching their first conference road win since September of 2015 in a 49-7 beatdown of Oregon State in Corvallis. “No road win in three years, that’s a long time,” said quarterback Chase Garbers. “It was good to get this win and check off that box.
Gerald Alexander brings Cal secondary to new heights
Although Cal football seems to be mired in the same pitfalls from 2017 — an inconsistent passing rhythm, struggles on the offensive line and glaring road woes — there’s no mistaking that the Bears defense in the new era is for real.
Something stinks — Will Cal's offense roll with its current formula?
If you’re in denial because Cal was recently in the AP Top 25, then I have some news to break to you. Something is seriously wrong with the Cal offense, and until it gets fixed, the team’s improvement that many expected under second-year head coach Justin Wilcox will be severely capped. On first look, the offensive performance against Oregon may look unconcerning. Against a top-five rush defense, Patrick Laird had his best game of the season, averaging more than five yards a rush.

Avoiding a sophomore slump — how will Cal football perform in 2018?
Football, Gameday, Pressroom Banter Friday, August 31, 2018 Avoiding a sophomore slump: How Cal football can continue trending upward Cal football head coach Justin Wilcox’s tenure began last year with a truly shocking 35-30 win over the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, bucking the consensus of a double-digit Tar Heels win prediction.
UNC rematch, Pac-12 rivals highlight Cal football's 2018 schedule
Football Wednesday, July 25, 2018 UNC rematch, Pac-12 rivals highlight Cal football’s 2018 schedule Lianne Frick/File While the 5-7 start to Cal football head coach Justin Wilcox’s tenure with the Bears did not end with a bowl game appearance — despite appearing to be on track for one at different points — it certainly left fans with high expectations for Wilcox’s sophomore effort.
Jared Goff shines in second season | The Daily Californian
The Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback and Cal alum Jared Goff has accomplished a lot in his sophomore season, leading the NFL’s highest-scoring offense and taking the Rams to their first winning record since 2003. But his greatest accomplishment may be that he will now always be the textbook case in what a change in environment can do for a talented young player.

A hater's plea | The Daily Californian
When did we all get so goddamn nice? It’s a strange time to make the argument that there’s a part of the world that isn’t cruel enough, but now a trend that started when Kevin Durant signed with the Golden State Warriors has fully taken hold. The broadening liberalization of sports media has made criticizing stars and their decisions blasé. And just like joining a 73-win team that eliminated you from the playoffs, that sucks.
Cal football had severe highs, lows in Justin Wilcox's 1st year | The Daily Californian
In a sport where there’s no such thing as a moral win, it’s hard to make sense of a season in which a team misses out on making a bowl game and extended an embarrassing streak of conference road losses, but still managed to show a lot of promise. What can’t be argued is that this was one of the most interesting Cal football seasons in recent memory, showing that having moved on from Sonny Dykes and his Bear Raid offense didn’t mean a drop in excitement was also on the way.
Cal can't capitalize on 2nd-half absence of Josh Rosen, falls to UCLA 30-27 | The Daily Californian
There were a lot of factors that looked to be going Cal football’s way in their quest to become bowl-eligible with a road win over UCLA. The Bruins had just fired their head coach Jim Mora, and just a year ago, the Bears blew out UCLA in their Thanksgiving week game.
Tough questions | The Daily Californian
That one felt pretty close, right? In a season in which so much has gone right in unexpected victories, the way the Bears hung around in the 120th Big Game made a classic win start to feel almost inevitable. But eventually, Stanford pulled away, just as it had in the past seven Big Games before Saturday, and a game that had the feel of a to-be magical contest turned out to just be an incredibly quick and fairly uneventful 17-14 Cardinal win.
Daily Cal triumphs over Stanford Daily in Ink Bowl, 37-14, to avenge 2015 loss
Have you ever had an appetizer so good that the entree became irrelevant? With its 37-21 win over the Stanford Daily on Cardinal ground, The Daily Californian Ink Bowl squad managed to avenge a brutal loss two years ago and make Cal’s loss in the Big Game an afterthought in the minds of everyone that mattered.
All the chips on the table for Cal football, Stanford in Big Game | The Daily Californian
There’s no such thing as an “unimportant” Big Game, but Cal football head coach Justin Wilcox’s first go-around comes at a particular doozy of a time. Big stakes for the Bears? Check. They need one more win to become bowl-eligible in a season in which that initially felt like an impossibility, and it’s almost impossible to imagine a sweeter outcome for Cal faithful than clinching a bowl over the Cardinal. And for Stanford? Absolutely.
Tale of the tape: How the pistol formation unlocks Cal football's personnel | The Daily Californian
Cal football has become an exciting team to watch week in and week out, and the play-calling of offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin is no small part of that. With the hiring of a defensive-minded head coach in Justin Wilcox, it seemed possible that the Bears would do away with the high-flying, spread-it-out style we’ve seen over the past few years. But Wilcox apparently had no intention into turning the Bears into a ground-and-pound team.
Big Game Q&A with Stanford sports editor | The Daily Californian
Football Friday, November 17, 2017 Big Game Q&A with Stanford sports editor Lianne Frick/Senior Staff Editor’s note: The following is a Q&A between Andrew Wild, sports editor of The Daily Californian, and Jose Saldana, sports editor at the Stanford Daily. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. Andrew Wild: Coming in between a huge matchup against Washington and next week’s game against Notre Dame, do you think there’s risk of this being a look-over game for Stanford?
It could happen | The Daily Californian
In case you were busy living life this weekend, you may have missed the fact that college football went up in flames. We are now due for a chaotic and nightmarish playoff field of two-loss teams and a conference championship slate of unseemly rematches. If you’re a higher-up at the NCAA, this is an embarrassment (same if you’re a higher up at Georgia or Notre Dame). But if you’re a part of Cal football? This is a dream.
Cal Women's Basketball sophomore out for remainder of season
Cal women’s basketball sophomore guard Mi’Cole Cayton will miss the remainder of the 2017-18 season due to a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament in her right knee. She suffered the injury in the Bears’ season opener against St. Mary’s, in which she had 13 points, two assists and two steals. Last year, Cayton received a Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention after starting the last 12 games of the season for the Bears.
Justin Wilcox, Cal football's biggest test lies ahead
What came first? Oregon State’s incompetent defensive line or Cal football’s impressive offensive line? Patrick Laird’s explosion into a true featured running back or a Beavers team that just can’t travel on the road? A resurgent effort from the Bears’ defense or a flustered Oregon State quarterback forced into action by injury?
Cal volleyball can't overcome injuries, loses in straight sets to Oregon, Oregon State | The Daily Californian
Needing to overcome some brutal injuries in order to avenge two losses from earlier in the season, Cal volleyball was hoping that returning to Haas Pavilion would be enough. Against No. 9 Oregon and Oregon State, it wasn’t. Accordingly, this weekend the team suffered another pair of straight-set losses to the teams from the Beaver State.
A change coming on: defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter has the Bears walking again | The Daily Californian
It seemed like the fun was over. Cal had opened the season with upset wins over UNC and Ole Miss. But after two brutal losses on the road where the team simply looked out of sorts, it was time to shut down the party. The high-flying offense of No. 8 Washington State was coming to Memorial Stadium, and it looked to be the closing act. Cougars quarterback Luke Falk had parlayed years of tormenting Pac-12 defenses into a Heisman campaign that was peaking as he looked to carve up Cal’s defense.

Oregon State comes to Cal football for crucial Pac-12 matchup | The Daily Californian
Football Friday, November 3, 2017 Oregon State comes to Cal football for crucial Pac-12 matchup Ethan Epstein/File Two weeks ago, the outlook for this matchup felt very different. Oregon State was coming off an out-of-the-blue departure from respected coach Gary Andersen, and Cal football had just vanquished No. 8 Washington State at home with a defensive performance for the ages.
Cal women's crew has dominant performance at the Head of the American
It’s not easy for Cal women’s crew to particularly impress at the Head of the American. There’s quite a billing to live up to when the Bears head down for an early-season tournament that they began this year’s fall season with. Their A team dominates the other team’s best, and their B team holds its own with the other school’s best.
Cal football loses to Colorado, 44-28, after poor defensive 1st half | The Daily Californian
Some coaches would argue it’s better to play aggressively and get beaten on defense for big plays occasionally, rather than die by five yard gain after five yard gain. Well, when the opposing offense can put up a big play on every drive of the game, it hardly makes a difference. The front seven played well, but the only thing that mattered on the scoreboard were the massive mistakes in the secondary that doomed Cal football to a 44-28 loss in the Boulder, Colorado altitude.
Play to win | The Daily Californian
I’m a fairly conservative sports viewer. I distrust score-first point guards, think that Yasiel Puig is making himself look like a clown when he bat flips after a base hit, and still maintain that Kevin Durant choosing to join the Warriors was a travesty and his ring “doesn’t count” (I don’t even know what that really means). But there’s one level of sports conservatism I will never stoop to.
John Wall is your 2017 MVP | The Daily Californian
People have no idea who John Wall is. Okay, maybe they know his name. But for a college star, No. 1 overall pick, consistent All-Star who’s dragged an awful Wizards franchise to 22 games over .500 over the past four seasons, people know nothing about him. When he wins MVP this year, maybe people will start to recognize what’s special.
Gridiron Book Club: Everything you wanted to know about Patrick Laird's favorite books | The Daily Californian
Redshirt junior running back Patrick Laird exploded onto the scene with massive performances in Cal’s week-one upset over UNC and week-two win over Weber State. But with his touchdown celebration of turning the pages of a book, he made headlines with his extracurriculars as well. The celebration was no joke, so we caught up with him regarding his favorite hobby. When do you first remember starting to read as a hobby?

Does he have a hidden weakness? Well, not that we’ve seen so far.
Cal football to face Arizona Wildcats after upset win last week
There’s no longer any doubt that Cal football and head coach Justin Wilcox can deliver stunning upsets. But Arizona is a very different school from the sorts that have sputtered out against the Bears this season, and Wilcox just needs to show he can deliver when people come to truly expect victories.
