Why are gold and bitcoin rising together?
Important information - investment values and income from investments can go down as well as up, so you may get back less than you invest. In the first six months of 2026, gold and bitcoin were the worst performing investments in a balanced portfolio. Since the start of the summer, they have been the best. Bitcoin has risen from $60,000 to $80,000 since July. Last week alone it jumped by 20%. Gold, meanwhile, has risen by 15% in August. This is odd. Gold is the archetypal safe haven.
How do investment returns work? The basics
Important information: investment values and income from investments can go down as well as up, so you may get back less than you invest. Your investment has returned 8%. But what does that actually mean for your money? Put simply, your investment return is the gain or loss you make over a period of time. A positive return means you made a gain. A negative return means you made a loss.

Microsoft Cares About Your Privacy The state pension age may have to rise again, so protect your retirement: Andrew Oxlade
Continue reading Andrew Oxlade Twenty years ago, the government set out a proposed timetable for increasing the state pension age to 68. As a 32-year-old, it galvanised my interest in retirement saving. And I wasn't alone. I remember that the website I was managing at the time saw a remarkable influx of questions from people younger than me, alarmed by the prospect of such a late retirement date. Broadly, they wanted to know where to start in their 20s so they could retire in their 50s in the 2030s.

Does the oil price surge make green energy a good investment? Andrew Oxlade
Andrew Oxlade Buyers of solar panels a decade ago are likely to be pleased with their investment. Rooftop systems that might once have been expected to take around 15 years to pay for themselves through lower electricity bills are likely to have broken even far sooner. The energy price surge of 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, dramatically altered the economics.

Why I'm telling my kids to saddle themselves with student debt: Andrew Oxlade
Andrew Oxlade Anger is growing about student loans. And not just among those repaying them. Parents, sitting with the uncomfortable truth that their university courses were free, are becoming more vocal. The debate is complicated because there have been different loan schemes with different terms. The controversy centres on ‘Plan 2'. Several million graduates who started university courses between 2012 and 2022 took these loans in England - and the scheme still runs in Wales.

Should I borrow at 1% or let my son do it at 7%? ANDREW OXLADE on a parent's student loan roulette decision
Students up and down the country have been heading for fresher events, eagerly embracing what will be one of the best times of their life. And so they should, following the awful curtailment of university life during the Covid years. Meanwhile, for those parents who have built a little wealth, there is a weighty financial consideration to ponder. It is a roulette-wheel decision like no other I can think of in financial services: do you pay living costs for your child?

Mientras tanto, en Europa, Shell perdió un caso judicial histórico que le obliga a reducir sus emisiones de carbono.
How to cope with a 10% investment fall
A friend told me this week that he’d finally decided to become an investor. He had accumulated a decent amount of money for his family’s future and often grumbled as he watched inflation steadily erode its value. Read more: Three scenarios that show how quickly inflation can erode your wealth Why had it taken so long for him to invest? Quite simply, it was the fear of losing money. Unfortunately for him, that’s exactly what happened next.
What returns do you expect from assets over the next 10 years?
Accurately forecasting returns for investing is not just difficult, it’s impossible. However, the guesses that people offer can tell their own story. We put an impossible question to 1,104 UK investors as part of our most recent Global Investor Study. We asked relatively experienced investors what returns they expected for their Isas over the next decade, based on the money being invested in different assets.
S&P 500's 4% fall: How stockmarkets perform after big one day falls - Private Investor - Schroders
Falls in the US stockmarket this week will have understandably unnerved investors the world over. The S&P 500 fell 4.1% on Monday, the largest one day fall since August 2011, when markets feared contagion from the European sovereign debt crisis. Today, the concerns are less profound and actually stem from a bright economic backdrop. The US economy is growing at a pace that may create too much inflation, which in turn may necessitate rapid increases in interest rates.

Why interest rates predictions have suddenly shifted - Private Investor - Schroders
Pressure is building for interest rates to be raised in the UK following a surge in inflation to a five-year high. The Bank of England’s monetary policy committee (MPC) is tasked with keeping inflation at around 2% in the years ahead. But the consumer prices index (CPI) climbed to 2.9% in May, up from 1.8% at the start of the year. The surge in inflation has caught markets by surprise and led to a shift in expectations for rates.
Tweets that rock the markets - Private client - Cazenove Capital
News has always moved markets and those first in the know can, in theory, gain an advantage. This is a constant. What has changed – and beyond all recognition in the past century – are the methods of distributing news. Consider one of most significant stories of the 20th century – the sinking of the Titanic. The disaster occurred at a significant time in the development of communication, with the spread of wireless telegraphy.
Investment trust winners of 2016 - Private Investor - Schroders
Investment trusts focused on Asia are on course to deliver some of the best returns in 2016, according to data for trust sectors. Investment trusts are an alternative to more commonly held open-ended funds or unit trusts, offering some advantages. This is explained here: investment trusts vs open-ended funds. Here, we look at the performance of some of the more popular investment trust sectors as 2016 draws to a close.
Are world stockmarkets good value going into 2017? - Private Investor - Schroders
Global stockmarkets have seen a turbulent year, but surprised many with the resilience shown after the Brexit vote and the US presidential election result. Both the US and UK markets are significantly ahead of where they started the year, as is Japan, although Europe - which faces a series of major elections in 2017 - has effectively gone nowhere. Recovering oil and commodity prices and better than expected economic data from the UK and US has helped.
S&P history: How the US stock market performs after heavy one day falls - Schroders global - Schroders
The US stockmarket has delivered average annual returns of 14.9% in the five years following its worst days of the past quarter century, according to analysis by Schroders. The data underlines the historic resilience of shares over longer timeframes, even following major shocks. The biggest rebound was a return of 164%, or an annualised 21%, in the five years after a crash on 20 November 2008, when the S&P 500 fell by 6.7%.
What is a safe amount to take from a pension? - Private Investor - Schroders
Nearly half of those withdrawing money from pensions may be doing so at an unsustainable rate, according to analysis of industry figures by Schroders. It once again raises the difficult question of how individuals can calculate a safe level of income withdrawal that will ensure their pension pot outlasts them. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published data on the first full year of “pension freedoms” for the UK, shedding some light on rates of withdrawal for those who enter drawdown.
Two UK interest rate cuts in 2016? Latest forecasts and key questions answered
Markets* are pricing in a 100% chance of a 0.25% cut in the UK bank rate on Thursday, which would mark the first change in more than seven years. A further cut is expected by November, down to zero percent with no return to 0.5% anticipated until 2021. These potential rate cuts, combined with a possible return of other stimulus measures, could force rate cuts on savings accounts and lead to lower rates on new mortgages.
Where next for UK interest rates post Brexit?
The Bank of England (BoE) is expected to order a cut in the UK bank rate within the next two months, according to markets. The money markets (the implied forecasts from the Overnight Indexed Swap or OIS, taken at 4pm on 8 July 2016) imply a strong possibility of a reduction in July to 0.25% and fully price in a cut for August. Trading also suggests a further reduction to 0% may be ordered in November.
How Brexit might impact your personal finances
The recovery in stockmarkets is due in part to the prospect of central banks pumping more money into the economy. That hope has not just pushed up share prices but also increased demand for government bonds. As the price of bonds rise, the yields fall. It is these yields that reflect the cost of borrowing for governments but also affect borrowing costs throughout the economy.
I'm not a Telegraph journalist and this isn't a news story. It's just proving how quickly a site can now be edited and shared... but I still can't widow headlines, I have standards
I could write anything here. Absolutely anything. This has been possible for forever by simply messing with the HTML but one URL shortener has made it so very easy to do. I don't work for the Telegraph nor have I ever worked for them. But this page looks an awful lot like I do. And with the anything, I could just write BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH right here and only then would it probably break the Daily Telegraph's style guide.
