Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, for fun at one point.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer pitches that are concise, well-researched, and clearly tied to Los Angeles. The best ones get straight to the point—no longer than a few paragraphs—and highlight why the story matters now, who the key voices are, and what makes it unique. A strong subject line helps, and it’s always clear when a writer understands Los Angeles Magazine’s tone and audience. Email is the best way to reach me, and while follow-ups are fine, they should be spaced out and relevant.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist because I’m drawn to storytelling and uncovering the details that others might overlook. There’s something powerful about finding the right angle, asking the right questions, and shaping a narrative that informs, engages, and sometimes even changes perspectives—not only through writing but also through video and content that craft the message in a compelling way. Whether it’s covering culture, local news, or deeper investigative pieces, I love the challenge of making complex topics accessible and relevant to readers.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

“That it’s all about celebrity gossip and fluff pieces.”Many people assume covering Los Angeles means focusing solely on red carpets and Hollywood drama, but your work involves in-depth reporting on city politics, local businesses, cultural trends, and stories that impact Angelenos. You balance breaking news with thoughtfully curated features that give readers a deeper understanding of the city beyond its entertainment industry.
