Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first "gig" was writing a small article for The Forest City News as a fifth or sixth grade student. In fact, I still have the clip.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I have used a typewriter. Typewriters weren't out of vogue when I was very young - about 6 years old.

How is social media changing news?

Social media changed the speed of news and how most people find out what’s going on in their world. I think there is great power in social media, but I think that power needs to be used to serve the public through the fundamentals of journalism.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To me, being a journalist means being accurate and trustworthy.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is best, but tweets get my attention. Just Google me and make sure it's something I cover.

Why did you become a journalist?

There are so many reasons why I became a journalist. I’m in love with profession. But, if I had to pick one reason, it would be that I get to tell people about the world around them. I get to help them understand. How can a person not love doing that?
