YouTube app finally arrives on Apple Vision Pro
With Apple, Meta and Google all holding back apps on their rivals' platforms, Google blinked first. The YouTube app is now available on visionOS. Last November, FlatpanelsHD highlighted how VR/AR/XR has become the latest front in the platform war, after the tech giants largely buried the hatchet on mobile and TV. The Apple TV app, for example, is still missing on Meta's Horizon OS and Android XR, while YouTube has long been absent from Apple's visionOS.
Apple Vision Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy XR vs. Meta Quest 3
While Meta is cutting costs with low-end hardware, Apple and Samsung are aiming to set a new benchmark for visual quality in headsets with 4K micro-OLED displays. Until now, Meta has defined the VR market with its Quest line; affordable headsets featuring low-contrast, low-resolution LCD panels and weak processors. They run on a fork of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which Meta calls Horizon OS. Rumor has it that Meta is working on something more ambitious.

Will your next glasses be made by Apple?
Apple is finally going to release a pair of smart glasses – but only at the end of next year. “Company engineers are ramping up work on the glasses – a rival to Meta Platforms’ popular Ray-Bans – in a bid to meet the year-end 2026 target,” writes Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the best Apple watcher in the business. “Apple will start producing large quantities of prototypes at the end of this year with overseas suppliers,” he quoted people in the know.
We finally have a real look at Google’s Android XR glasses in action
We’ve been tracking the development of Google’s Android XR platform for a little while now. Designed for the next generation of smart glasses and mixed-reality headsets, we got the first conceptual glimpse late last year directly from Google. While those more-produced videos showcasing potential use cases are interesting, they often paint an idealistic picture that is a bit removed from real-world performance. However, things recently got a lot more tangible.
Samsung’s Project Moohan Android XR headset teased yet again at MWC 2025
Mobile World Congress 2025 has provided another look at Samsung’s Project Moohan, an XR headset that the company has been developing in collaboration with Google. This device is likely to be the first to utilize the Android XR platform, a system designed to power both headsets and smart glasses. While it appears Samsung’s booth at MWC doesn’t include hands-on demos, they are at least allowing attendees to get a closer look at the hardware itself.
Google’s just dropped $250 million on HTC’s XR talent: Here’s why it’s a big deal
It looks like Google’s getting real serious about Android XR, the new platform from Google, Qualcomm, and Samsung that’s made for all things virtual and augmented reality. According to a short blog post on The Keyword, they just shelled out a cool quarter of a billion dollars to get some top-tier talent from HTC’s Vive team. This isn’t the first time Google has tapped HTC for some serious brainpower.
Why I’m far more excited for Samsung’s AR glasses than their Android XR headset
Amidst the whirlwind of new Samsung Galaxy S25 phones and a sneak peek of the much-anticipated XR headset at Galaxy Unpacked, something else caught my eye: one simple slide during the presentation that shows AR glasses on Samsung’s development timeline. While the XR headset (Project Moohan) garnered most of the spotlight at the event, this subtle tease of Samsung AR glasses could be far more interesting long term.
