Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

The Dunfermline Press, a great weekly in a busy patch.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I was fascinated by my gran's old typewriter, mucking around on it as a child, and still have a lovely machine in the house.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tintin.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

It all starts with notebook and pencil, but ends up online, in print and as podcasts.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I read as many as I can - and always try to read regional, local papers whenever I visit somewhere new.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That politics is about politicians. It's not. It's about communities and the impact policies have on people.
