What was your first job as a journalist?
Right out of college, I tried freelance writing. I did too many things for free.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Robbie Robertson from the Spider-Man comics. Robbie knows.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Electronic mail.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram. Least amount of fuss; nicest bots.
Who do you wish followed you?
Is this like the 2015 version of the dinner date question? The kid from "Smart Guy" followed me for a day once. I wish he'd come back.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
For me, it's "Works in Progress," available in my portfolio. I think it's the right balance of storytelling, information, and engagement.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Stay out of your own way. Do the work.
When's the best time to pitch you?
7 a.m. Coffee's kicked in by then.
What's your favorite drink?
To wake up: the Iced Dirty Chai with an extra shot at Central Coffee in Charlotte. To wind down: Hop, Drop 'n Roll at NoDa Brewing Company.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On a city bus, headed toward a story. Or maybe I'm with my infant daughter, playing dinosaurs on our living room floor.

Journal of Paleontology.
