Calling my shot: Five bold predictions for the 2026 college football season
When I unveiled my Bold Predictions this time last year, I called the 2025 season the most unpredictable in years. I was correct because only four of those 10 predictions came true. That’s OK. Batting .400 gets you into the Hall of Fame in some sports. This year feels even more unpredictable, and we probably should get used to that in the transfer portal/NIL era. Teams change drastically every offseason, and we may not know until October how to accurately gauge their prospects.
Big Ten, SEC betting their NFL player ban can survive the same lawyers who just beat the NCAA
What the Big Ten and SEC did Tuesday was the first necessary step to test whether their Plan B has any chance of working. They’re going to get sued, and they may do some suing themselves. And when the dust settles, we’ll know if their idea has a chance to work.
Is the SEC willing to fight LSU to enforce its own rule?
If the SEC wants to enforce its existing intraconference transfer rule — which differs from the NCAA rule and the rules of other leagues — it will have to threaten conference member LSU with discipline should the school opt to break the rule. Is the league willing to do that?
Which games on the 2026 college football schedule could match No. 1 vs. No. 2?
A viewer named Garrett asked a fantastic question this week: Do you think we will have a No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup this season? Love to hear your ideas and what games could potentially be 1v2. It hasn’t been that long since No. 1 played No. 2 outside the College Football Playoff. Last year’s Indiana–Ohio State Big Ten title game matched the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Associated Press poll. But it’s been a little longer since two such teams met in the regular season.

Auburn and Florida are spending like College Football Playoff contenders, but can they crash the field?
Heading into 2026, you’ve probably crossed the Sarkisian Line if your payroll is close to — but not necessarily over — $30 million. What does this have to do with the AP poll? I wondered if I can use the Sarkisian Line to try to predict which currently unranked teams might make the CFP.
Why is New Mexico coach Jason Eck showing up on so many coaching wish lists? Because he just keeps winning no matter the level
Dec 26, 2025; Phoenix, AZ, USA; New Mexico Lobos head coach Jason Eck against the Minnesota Golden Gophers during the Rate Bowl at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Eck understands eyes from everywhere will be on his team — and not only from power conference schools looking for players to poach. The quarterbacks at Michigan and Ohio State see The Game in vastly different ways
Julian Sayin is from Carlsbad, Calif., so the Ohio State QB didn’t exactly grow up with a true appreciation for the rivalry between the Buckeyes and the group they refer to as The Team Up North. Bryce Underwood grew up in Detroit. The Michigan QB should understand exactly how deep the rivalry between the Wolverines and the Buckeyes runs. Yet here is Sayin’s answer last week when I asked him if he ever accidentally let the M-word pass his lips. “You learn very quickly when you get here.

New Ole Miss coach Pete Golding tried to be polite; it lasted 17 minutes
It’s going to be boring, they hinted. He’s been coached up, they said. The day before Pete Golding’s first SEC media days appearance as the Ole Miss head coach, the warnings flowed. The rough edges would feel sanded down. The defensive coordinator who had been tossed into the head coach’s chair after an unprecedented exit wouldn’t cuss.
