Synopsis Fluorescence properties of water can be used to predict human-associated bacteria in watersheds and subwatersheds for providing estimates of wastewater contamination. Introduction Sewage contamination from illicit discharges and leaking sewer infrastructure in the Great Lakes region and elsewhere is a substantial source of contamination in tributaries and nearshore waters.

Advances in spectroscopic techniques have led to an increase in the use of optical properties (absorbance and fluorescence) to assess dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition and infer sources and processing. However, little information is available to assess the impact of biological and photolytic processing on the optical properties of original DOM source materials.
