A platinum butterfly effect: small changes turn an anticancer drug into a non-toxic metalloantibiotic with in vivo efficacy
Abstract Metal-based compounds have emerged as a promising class of potential antibiotics exhibiting high hit-rates against critical bacterial pathogens while not displaying higher toxicity than organic compounds. Here, we describe the exploration of novel, non-toxic, Gram-positive acting platinum-based antibacterial agents with high activity. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies revealed that the simplest scaffold showed the best antibacterial properties.

Synthesis and anti-microbial activity of a new series of bis(diphosphine) rhenium(V) dioxo complexes
Synthesis and anti-microbial activity of a new series of bis(diphosphine) rhenium(v) dioxo complexes† Saul M. Cooper, a Christina Siakalli, a Andrew J. P. White, a Angelo Frei, a Philip W. Miller *a and Nicholas J. Long *a Abstract Rhenium-based metallodrugs have recently been highlighted as promising candidates for new antibiotics to combat multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens.

To chelate thallium(i) – synthesis and evaluation of Kryptofix-based chelators for 201Tl† Angelo Frei, *ab Alex Rigby,b Thomas T. C. Yue, ab George Firth, b Michelle T. Ma b and Nicholas J. Long *a Abstract While best known for its toxic properties, thallium has also been explored for applications in nuclear diagnostics and medicine.
New approach for the synthesis of water soluble fac-[MI(CO)3]+ bis(diarylphosphino)alkylamine complexes (M = 99Tc, Re)
New approach for the synthesis of water soluble fac-[MI(CO)3]+ bis(diarylphosphino)alkylamine complexes (M = 99Tc, Re)† Dumisani V.
Glowing probe lights up the signs of cardiovascular trouble
The accumulation of plaque inside the arteries can be an insidious condition with grave consequences that include blood clots and strokes, but luckily it does give off some tell-tale signs. Researchers in the UK have developed a new type of glowing probe that focuses on one of them, increasing its fluorescence in the presence of a key enzyme and possibly acting as an early warning sign for cardiovascular disease.

Two is Better than One: Difunctional High-affinity PSMA Probes Based on a [CpM(CO)3] (M = Re/99mTc) Scaffold
Two is Better than One: Difunctional High-affinity PSMA Probes Based on a [CpM(CO)3] (M = Re/99mTc) Scaffold More than 10% of all men will be given the diagnosis “prostate cancer” during their lifetime. Most of the current radio-diagnostic vehicles involve both expensive and localized production with cyclotrons as well as the use of bulky chelators for the radiometal.
