Exploring serum biomarkers in paediatric psychiatry: the impact of NfL and GFAP
Abstract Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are biomarkers of neuroaxonal and astrocytic damage but remain understudied in adolescent psychiatric populations. This study investigated sNfL and GFAP levels in 412 adolescents diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN) (n = 52), depression (n = 237), and other psychiatric disorders (n = 123). We assessed their diagnostic utility, correlation with disease severity, and longitudinal changes during AN treatment.

Abstract Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the emergence of mental health problems. Adrenarche, an early stage of pubertal development marked by rising adrenal androgens, particularly dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), may influence emotional and behavioral development. However, longitudinal evidence linking early-adolescent endocrine influences to adolescent psychopathology remains limited.

Could leptin substitution therapy potentially terminate entrapment in anorexia nervosa? - Nature Reviews Endocrinology
Case studies of patients with anorexia nervosa revealed psychological improvements upon treatment with recombinant human leptin, including an alleviation of the entrapment in this eating disorder. Hypoleptinaemia induced by loss of adipose tissue mass might trigger psychological changes observed in starvation. Accordingly, leptin analogues might prove beneficial for treatment of anorexia nervosa. Starvation leads to a reduced synthesis and secretion of the hormone leptin.

Exposure to various environmental influences can lead to epigenetically induced changes in gene expression. Epigenetic research in AN is still in its infancy, and studies to date are limited in determining clear, valid links to disease onset and progression are limited.

Abstract Obesity is a multifactorial and complex disease that often manifests in early childhood with a lifelong burden. Polygenic and monogenic obesity are driven by the interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Polygenic variants are frequent and confer small effect sizes. Rare monogenic obesity syndromes are caused by defined pathogenic variants in single genes with large effect sizes.
Waist-hip ratio related genetic loci are associated with risk of impaired fasting glucose in Chinese children: a case control study
To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating association of the 11 GWAS derived WHR loci with FPG and risk of IFG in Chinese children. We identified three SNPs (rs6795735, rs984222 and rs1011731) showed individual effect on glycemic phenotypes. After Bonferroni correction, the individual effect of rs6795735 (ADAMTS9) on the risk of IFG remained significant.
