‘Feeling constantly kicked down’: A qualitative phenomenological study exploring rejection sensitivity in autistic adults
Abstract Autistic individuals are at greater risk of social rejection than non-autistic peers. On social media, adults with autism report an extreme sensitivity to social rejection. This qualitative study explored lived experiences of heightened rejection sensitivity in this population. Purposive sampling through social media was used to recruit 19 autistic adults aged 21–71 (11 women, 8 men) who self-reported heightened rejection sensitivity.
Masking, social context and perceived stress in autistic adults: An ecological momentary assessment study
Be yourself—there are already so many others. Loesje Autistic individuals1 have described using specific behavioral and cognitive strategies to fit in a predominantly non-autistic society (Cook et al., 2021). In the literature, this phenomenon is often called “camouflaging,” but it may also be termed “masking” or “compensation.” Following autistic community preferences, and as suggested by Pearson and Rose (2021), we use the term “masking” here.
School participation of autistic youths: The influence of youth, family and school factors
For school-aged youths, attending school provides them with the opportunity to participate in educational and social activities. School participation lays the foundation for knowledge acquisition, equipping youths with the skills required to attain financial self-sufficiency and lead independent lives in adulthood (Balfanz, 2016).
Two validation studies of a performance validity test for autistic adults
Abstract In two studies we examined the potential of a simple emotion recognition task, the Morel Emotional Numbing Test (MENT), as a performance validity test (PVT) for autism-related cognitive difficulties in adulthood. The aim of a PVT is to indicate non-credible performance, which can aid the interpretation of psychological assessments. There are currently no validated PVTs for autism-related difficulties in adulthood.
Objective and subjective psychosocial outcomes in adults with autism spectrum disorder: A 6-year longitudinal study
Many autistic adults1 find it difficult to attain socially ‘normative’ life goals such as holding a job, living independently or finding a romantic partner (Billstedt et al., 2011; Bishop-Fitzpatrick et al., 2016; Howlin & Moss, 2012; Roux et al., 2013).
Sex differences in the reciprocal behaviour of children with autism
Differences in the social limitations of girls compared to boys on the autism spectrum are still poorly understood. Impaired social-emotional reciprocity is a core diagnostic criterion for an autism spectrum disorder. This study compares sex differences in reciprocal behaviour in children with autism spectrum disorder (32 girls, 114 boys) and in typically developing children (24 girls, 55 boys).
