On April 8, 2024, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), a member organization of 241 small, mostly private colleges that oversees 83,000 collegiate athletes, voted to bar transgender women from participating in women’s competitions starting in fall 2024. The ban selectively, yet sweepingly, targeted all transfeminine women, limiting transgender women to eligibility in only men’s events, effectively banning them from gender-affirming competitive teams.
