What’s yours is mine: the EU’s threatened vaccine grab would damage the rule of law

Yet its latest threats to seize control over vaccines and other commercial property represent a grave threat to that principle, writes political scientist Dr Anna Bailey. It is hard to overstate the legal and political importance of the EU’s latest threat to seize Covid vaccines produced on EU territory.

Barnier’s fishy story on UK sovereignty
Last week, the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier gave an online talk on the state of the Future Relationship negotiations, organised by Ireland’s Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA). Needless to say, British and European journalists tuned in, listening carefully for their next headline story. They weren’t disappointed. Media outlets were soon reporting Barnier as having made an extraordinary statement on the UK’s right to control fishing in its waters.
Frost Vs Barnier: The battle for the blame narrative
This article originally appeared on Brexit Watch and is reproduced with kind permission. We enter this week’s fourth and final scheduled negotiating round between the UK and the EU with the rhetoric already having been ratcheted up several notches by both sides. David Frost’s letter to Michel Barnier of 19 May was widely acclaimed by Brexiteers, delighted that at last we have a negotiator prepared to stand up for Britain rather than cave in to EU demands. Barnier himself was less pleased.
The clock is ticking for the EU’s legal order
The clock is ticking. But for once, it’s not the Brexit clock. Earlier this month, the German Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) in Karlsruhe set a timebomb ticking under both the Eurozone and the EU’s legal order, with a three-month-long fuse.

Boris’s masterstroke? The demise of the Tory Ultra-Remainers

Ironically, it will take a ‘no deal’ to solve the Irish border issue
Only when the Northern Irish border is freed from the stifling political constraints of the UK-EU withdrawal negotiations can work on practical solutions begin. We already know what will happen to the border in the event of ‘no deal’ – nothing. Factcheck: What will really happen if MPs vote down May’s deal?
The decision to vote for or against the deal is the most important constitutional decision that parliament will make since it passed the European Communities Act in 1972. We urge all MPs to fully acquaint themselves with the legal facts on both EU withdrawal and UK parliamentary elections before voting.

Five shows to watch to prepare for the Emmys
Last week the Emmy nominations came and went with barely any surprises. “#Game of Thrones” was nominated for Best Drama, “Modern Family” was nominated for Best Comedy, and we’ll see the normal faces grace the stage once again. There were no mobs yelling “snub!” on Twitter and there wasn’t a hashtag like #OscarsSoWhite, so maybe this year will go over smoothly. Being under-prepared for the Emmy's is pretty embarrassing.
