INTRODUCTION Effective monitoring is key to understanding how species respond to environmental stressors (Cardinale et al., 2012), restoration efforts (Vega-Hidalgo et al., 2021) and management strategies (Gabriel et al., 2010). Monitoring, however, can be expensive and time-consuming, often requiring significant human effort and taxonomic expertise.
1 INTRODUCTION Insects are among the most abundant and diverse life forms on the planet (Zhang, 2013). They serve in key ecological roles; some cycle nutrients in the soil, pollinate the world's flowering plants and provide a major source of food for many species in both terrestrial and aquatic systems, while others are significant agricultural pests and human disease vectors (Losey & Vaughan, 2006; Lounibos, 2002; Møller, 2019).
