Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
freelance reporting
Have you ever used a typewriter?
When I was a kid there still were some around!
How is social media changing news?
A two-edged sword of compelling new voices on one hand and misinformed, unsubstantiated swill on the other.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Kermit the Frog, he clearly left an impression on kiddie TV!
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
by email
Why did you become a journalist?
because I love writing, getting to the bottom of things, conveying beauty - and in wine I have found the ultimate interdisciplinary subject.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Anything that is founded on deep research: numerous articles for The World of Fine Wine and my book, The Wines of Germany
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Know your audience, know your publication, know your angle, be persistent and know that getting a no is part of the job.
When's the best time to pitch you?
weekdays in the mornings
What's your favorite drink?
Champagne and other traditional method sparkling wines. Pinot Noir is a close second.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In my kitchen, in the garden with secateurs or pottin gcompost, in a vineyard, the sea, a swimming pool
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
FT, Observer, WOFW
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it's all drinking and swanning about.
