La Querencia brings the spirit of Argentina to Haymarket
10 minutes ago 3 min read Transporting diners from Haymarket to Buenos Aires, La Querencia combines authentic Argentine cooking, fine wines and a lively atmosphere. Anne Pia pulls up a stool at the barra to sample Edinburgh's latest South American arrival.
Sugo - The Stove & Stocisim - the Italian way by Anne Pia
My youngest daughter sits at the table. She is approaching middle age. Well, all three are! There is a plate of pasta before her… pappardelle, wonderful luscious ribbons, folding soft, enfolding and yielding. This pasta must surely be the king or queen of the pasta world; a pasta that is reliable and substantial; a pasta with presence which distinguishes itself at any gathering; demands attention; and a pasta which is never eaten al dente should that be your choice, though never mine.
Gio’s - one year on.
When the glitz and razzle of a Friday and Saturday night are over and you want a quiet meal out, no drama; to wear something low key …chill but ever on trend, and you want a space with some cachet, comfort and good fare too, the issue is where, for “Man does not live by bread alone” and all that!! Neighbourhood restaurants vary and Sunday nights in Edinburgh can be dismal, especially if you are the only diners… never the case in London of course with its plethora of cool, budget Asian...
Finding authentic Italian Pizza at Pizza Posto
Anne Pia 15 minutes ago 3 min read Life is often full of difficult decisions. What to eat for dinner Where to eat out that’s new and good Where to get the best pizza. Edinburgh, like any other city and indeed small town or hamlet, teems with pizza joints…from take-away to up-market glitz and cocktails.
Social by Matto: Mediterranean small plates in Edinburgh inspired by pintxos and cicchetti culture
San Sebastián in Spain’s Basque Country is famous for its stunning beach, elegant Belle Époque architecture, and perhaps most significantly, its world-class culinary scene. A global food hub, it is renowned for innovative chefs and its distinctive pintxos…mere mouthfuls of artfully crafted deliciousness, so tiny they need nothing more than a toothpick to hold them together.
A Foodie Guide to Hebridean Feasts and Hidden Gems
Anne Pia 14 minutes ago 5 min read An arrival on a campsite, this summer, at the immaculate Borve Camping and Caravan Site on Barra, oft visited by dolphins, is always a public event. And the putting up of a tent, especially by two older women, is I’m sure, a spectacle! Very much on view, we completed the task however, efficiently and without much ado. Guy lines taut and looking good; a fine job indeed. We ate a dinner of Sardinian fregula with lightly cooked tomatoes and green beans and turned in.
Indaba - Spanish Tapas
Anne Pia 7 minutes ago 3 min read Tollcross maybe gets too little attention as an area to eat out…and when I reflect on the streets around The Cameo and the Kings Theatre, many of the places I go to again and again, a late decision, an unplanned Friday night and a quick phone call if you are flexible about time, come to mind.
Locanda De Gusti by Anne Pia
Edinburgh’s Haymarket is in metamorphosis ... expanding, re-generating, fashioning a new identity. Once a somewhat run-of-the-mill thoroughfare, a place of interchange, transitions, trains and way-going, almost overnight, Haymarket now bubbles and bustles with new life; by day a glossy metropolis… inter-city travellers, commuting cyclists, garrulous rugger enthusiasts bound for Murrayfield, techie gurus, ultra-cool office dwellers and curious tourists, all spilling and filling new-dressed streets.
Noodles Home by Anne Pia
Creativity and quality aside, authenticity must surely be one of the hallmarks of good eating. When we eat out, be it Italian, Asian, or French cuisine, we want unspoilt, uncompromised food of that culture; which locals eat. Also, sometimes we want to be transported; to experience in as much as possible, in far-flung Edinburgh, how it feels to be sitting in a Madrid tapería, a noodle bar in Kyoto, a brasserie in the Auvergne or a chic cantina in Rome.
La Cime licensed cafe and deli reviewed by Anne Pia
One of the most rewarding ways to visit a grand city like London, Naples or Athens I’ve found, is to slip into the side streets of a neighbourhood; to leave the glitz and polish and wander with eyes wide open. It is through the unclothed and unpresented that we discover a city’s heart and soul: ways of life different from our own; local people going about their business. And the greatest joy, of course, is to unearth places where they choose to eat, drink and meet friends.
Cata - a ray of Spanish sunshine in Stockbridge by Anne Pia
There’s a lot of caffeine in Stockbridge! Here be a clutch of baristas at their professional best. For dark-hearted roasts that titillate, soothe, or fire you up in the morning, Artisan Roast, Fortitude, Twelve Triangles, Two Children, Leo’s Beanery, and La Barantine all offer a great brew. Coffee is not the whole Stockbridge story, however.
The Goose on the Green Cafe in Gullane. Reviewed by Anne Pia, Author and Food Writer.
The great adventure of life! So much to discover and enjoy. And what a treasure is Gullane… you know, that quieter, unassuming seaside township in East Lothian, with winding walkways by the waves and soft fringed beaches, where rich birdlife thrives; and where the water is at times blue and sparkling… more often a brooding metal grey. Gullane has eateries to suit almost every pocket.
