Move Over, Mariah
Submitted. Diego's Umbrella and Vaughn Lindstrom (center) recently released their take on "The Christmas Revels." San Francisco's Diego's Umbrella has been pioneering its own brand of high-energy gypsy rock since 2001, and in the meantime have become touring favorites in Bend.
Hip-Hop Subscription
Submitted. Baba Zumbi, the voice behind Zion I, talks about including his fans in the creative process via Patreon. When Baba Zumbi, the primary member in hip-hop crew Zion I, started out in the late '90s, the music industry was a very different place. When he wanted to release an album, Zumbi would tell his distributors and they'd provide an advance that would help him record.
A Different Perspective
Submitted. David von Schlegell, far left, and Cosmonautical celebrate the release of the band's debut album at Volcanic 11/23. When I met with the (very tall) David von Schlegell for an interview at Spoken Moto (my favorite part about writing about local bands) he handed me a burned copy of the new Cosmonautical album, enclosed in an old Garth Brooks CD case. After parting ways, I immediately listened to the whole thing in my truck.
There's Still Hope
Submitted. Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters bring their all-female, rock-meets-Americana sound to the Domino Room 11/23. I talk to men about music every week. Don't get me wrong; this job is awesome—but week after week, I ask myself, where are all the women? I know they're out there. I've been seeking them out since I first heard "Just a Girl" by No Doubt in fifth grade.
American Hybrid
Submitted. Jesse Dayton has played alongside legends like Waylon Jennings and now creates his own brand of what he calls "smart" country music. Country singer Jesse Dayton has worked with a lot of incredible musicians and filmmakers. He recorded with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. He co-wrote songs with Rob Zombie and acted in several of his films. He played guitar on tour for punk legends, X.
Purpose Fulfilled
Submitted. Charlie Porter studied at Juilliard and has traveled the world playing trumpet. He performs at Cascades Theatre on 11/17—part of the routinely sold-out Jazz at Joe's series. Charlie Porter has had a busy career, with no signs of slowing down. Passionate and talented, the Portland-based trumpet player found his groove on the New York jazz scene while studying classical trumpet at The Juilliard School.
Young Reflections
This year marks the 15th annual Church of Neil—at least, founder Andy Fecteau thinks it's probably the 15th time he's put on the small, one-day festival celebrating the music of Neil Young. About 15 years ago, Fecteau says he was the owner of Rebound Physical Therapy and had just opened a sports performance lab within the business. His wife—who he credits as the founder of the event—found out that Neil Young's birthday was coming up and suggested they have a party for him in the lab.
To Russia and Back
Lucas Warford has lived in Portland for about 10 years, witnessing a variety of creative and talented people come and go from his band, Three For Silver. While he says Portland is a whirlpool of creative forces, he also feels disconnected from the city's music scene. Three For Silver plays what some people would describe as vintage, progressive folk music. The band has fans in the region, but does even better elsewhere.
Budtender OlympicsContestantsTest your cannabis knowledgeJoint RollingI.D. the strain
They came. They rolled. They quizzed. And in the end, one awesome local emerged victorious in our annual contest of budtender prowess. For the second year in a row, we invited a budtender from each dispensary in Central Oregon to compete in our friendly competition that tests budtenders' knowledge and skill, in four different rounds.
Got Your Number
When Alex Berger noticed a lack of infused beverages within the Oregon medical marijuana industry in 2014, he wasted no time co-founding Magic Number. Originally a technical consultant from Cincinnati turned Oregonian, Berger saw the cannabis industry on the verge of recreation legalization and charged the scene. His goal: produce the best craft cannabis-brewed beverages in Oregon—and he and his partners are well on their way to accomplishing this.
Bottom's Up
Want to absorb the health benefits of CBD, but not into smoking? CBD products have infiltrated the marketplace in a variety of forms, from tinctures to gummies to a wide array of beverages. We scoped out the local CBD beverage scene and found lots of options to please palates. Ablis may be the best known CBD beverage company to come out of Central Oregon in recent years.
The State of Cannabis in Deschutes County-and Beyond
There's a lot going on out there in the world of cannabis, including rule changes at the county level, overproduction, the black market and hemp. So sit back, maybe even light a doob, and read on.
The Leaflet
Two times a year, the staff at the Source Weekly gets the pleasure of turning its focus to an industry that many of us didn't believe would emerge in our lifetimes. But recreational cannabis is indeed a reality, and one the world is waking up to, as well. Canada legalized marijuana country-wide Oct. 17. Yay, Canada! Hemp farming in the U.S. is booming. And here in our neck of the woods, well... our proud cannabis industry peeps continue to press on.
What's with Terpenes?
Pot Pop Quiz: When you go into a dispensary and see jars of flower, you probably look for three things: strain name, the THC content and whether it's a sativa, indica or hybrid. What should you add to that list, and perhaps make most important?
For Your Review
Whether joints or vapes are your method of consumption, here are a few items we like right now. Princewoodart portable rolling/stash box Sometimes, you just want a joint—the analog, OG method of consumption. Carrying around papers and weed in your pocket is fine, but a flat, stable rolling surface isn't always readily available. This is a stylish, practical and beautiful solution, handmade in Oregon. Princewoodart is the Etsy store of Paul N.
World Music Rebels
As Bend continues to grow, the city attracts bigger-name performers, as well as more unique talents that may not have come in the past. Fortunately for people in Central Oregon, this area is on Dirtwire's radar. Fans have the pleasure of welcoming them back to the Volcanic Theatre Pub this week, bringing a blend of world sounds with electronic, funky grooves. Dirtwire includes the talents of David Satori from Beats Antique, Evan Fraser from Bolo and Mark Reveley from Jed and Lucia.
Move Right In
The singers that Portland's Ural Thomas has counted among his contemporaries reads like the list of Lifetime Achievement Award winners. Thomas first forayed into a career in music back in the 1950s, '60s and '70s, performing with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding and James Brown. After taking a break from professional music, it took him several more decades to release an album. Thomas, a fixture in the Portland music scene, known for his jam sessions, never quit singing and performing.
His Truth
Lyrics Born has earned several "first" titles over the years. He takes the title of first Asian-American solo rapper to release a greatest hits record and perform at major festivals including Coachella and Lollapalooza. Now, he also stands as the first Asian-American solo rapper to release a 10th album.
Fascination with the Unknown
When Halloween falls in the middle of the week, like it does this year, it means Bend goes big—expanding the tricks and musical treats to the weekends both before and after the spookiest day of the year. This year, for those willing to brave the mid-week hangover, TAUK brings a rock-meets-funk fusion to Volcanic Theatre Pub. The group's latest album offers plenty of dance-worthy jams to set the mood for Halloween debauchery.
Textures and Tones
Once in a while, a band comes through town and you just know that someday they'll be headlining the Les Schwab Amphitheater. After listening to songs like "Fistfight," from the recently released EP, "Paper Crown," I have no doubt The Ballroom Thieves will be one of those bands about which we'll say, "I saw them when..." Fans of The Head and The Heart, The Avett Brothers and The Lumineers, don't hesitate to snap up your tickets to this show.
Feeling Alive
The last time we checked in with Brandon Prinzing, he'd brought his scratchy vocals and folk-meets-punk sound to the helm of the now-defunct local band, Riot on a Sunday. Nearly a year later, he's on the cusp of releasing his first album under the moniker Brandon Prinzing and the Old Revival. The album is helped along by producer Aaron Gillespie, best known as the drummer for metalcore band Underoath and lead singer of alt-rock band The Almost.
Pass the Moonshine
For The Hook's lead singer Carlos Barata, bringing his band to the Pacific Northwest is a second homecoming. The band hails from Pennsylvania, but for a couple years, Barata and his fiancee called Salem, Ore., home, a place they loved because it acted as the perfect middle-point to explore the Pacific Northwest, and the change of scenery they craved. Early in 2017, tragedy struck when Barata's father, age 56, committed suicide.
Brutally Honest
Michael Glabicki and his band Rusted Root's biggest hit, "Send Me on My Way," first appeared on the 1994 album, "When I Woke." Now, more than 20 years later, Glabicki and Rusted Root's longtime guitar player and background vocalist Dirk Miller are on the road playing re-envisioned versions of the band's biggest hits. A true career musician, Glabicki also brings new songs on the road, ahead of releasing them on a future album.
Need for Speed
"I'd say that bluegrass is the punk of country music," says Nate Hilts, guitarist and vocalist for Canadian folk-bluegrass band The Dead South. "They came at it with a whole new speed. If you look at the Czech Republic, they look at bluegrass and country music as a form of revolt. I love the style of it in general, the fast picking; it's got a really interesting attack. The kind of tragic storytelling, I'm a sucker for that in a weird way. And just folk in general, acoustic instruments.
Find Yourself
I first had the pleasure of listening to Lande when they performed on the main stage at the Bend Summer Festival in July. "I grew up Jennifer Lande, that's my maiden name," Jennifer Lande told me. "In college, everyone just called me Lande. So Lande just stuck with me. When it came time to come up with a band name, because I just have a rotating variety of musicians I play with, Lande worked.
Born With It
Plenty of people have had something to say about the talent of one of the youngest band leaders in Bend, 14-year-old Maxwell Friedman. Friedman, who recently started his freshman year of high school, already boasts a well-rounded career in music — yes, I said career. And yes, he's only a teenager. It could be said that Friedman, who leads the Maxwell Friedman Group on keys, was born with music running through his veins.
Strong Roots
Bend Roots Revival boasts a rich history. What started as a few bands jamming in the Parrilla Grill and Victorian Café parking lots has evolved over the years. The festival, which features primarily local talent, celebrates the Bend music scene, as well as the local partners that allow music to thrive in the community. Outgrowing its original location, the fest now takes place on seven stages around the Deschutes Brewery.
So Metal
Bend Roots Revival truly has something for everyone, with musicians from nearly every genre represented. Case in point: Local band Gravewitch, representing the metal scene for the second year in a row. I sat down with the rockers to get their take on being the only metal band on the festival roster. Chris Fleming and Andrew Ingraham, the two co-founding members, started the band in 2013 when they were still in high school. The two had been best friends for years and wanted to be in a band together.
Sound and Color
In this same issue one year ago, we introduced you to a brand new band on the Bend music scene — AM Clouds, that performed its first public live performance at Bend Roots Revival. We're continuing this trend with this year's Local Music Issue, introducing you to yet another up-and-coming band in Bend. Meet The Color Study, a passion project with Scott Oliphant at the reins. Oliphant has a wealth of experience playing in bands and working in recording studios.
Pick's Picks: Bend Roots
Bend Roots Revival founder Mark Ransom was gracious enough to offer his take on what bands to highlight during this year's festival. I have a few of my own picks included as well, but with insider knowledge from the king of Bend Roots, you may discover your new favorite local band. One of Bend's longest-running bands returns to Bend Roots after a long hiatus performing in the Bend music scene.

Collaborative and Playful
When I first heard female-fronted neo-grunge rockers Slothrust, I added singer Leah Wellbaum to my list of rock and roll spirit animals. I love female lead singers. I've drawn inspiration from greats including Shirley Manson, Allison Mosshart and Karen O—and now Wellbaum. Slothrust formed in Boston in 2012 and just released its fourth studio album, "The Pact," Sept. 14. On the new album, Wellbaum challengers herself as a writer, digging into the craft of songwriting on a different level.
The New California
When The Soft White Sixties entered the studio to record a new album, "Alta California," its members wanted to be able to capture the spirit of their live performance, after producer Elijah Thompson pointed out how sterile the recording atomsphere can be when compared to the energy and grit of a live show. "Some bands will write in an environment, perform in an environment and then go to record, and it's a sterile environment," lead singer Octavio Genera says.
Deconstruction vs. Destruction
When we last caught up with Elijah Goodall, the brains and muscle behind local experimental electro pop act This Island Earth, he told us about "Wounded Tropic," his three-album concept project about an island and its inhabitants that survive a brutal tropical storm. Over the 14 months since we last spoke, Goodall has been hard at work on "Wounded Tropic: Volume 1." An idea that started out theoretical took on a more personal response from Goodall and morphed the intent of the project.
Natural Growth
A couple months ago, a friend of mine who works at the Amphitheater teased me by saying entertainment agency, Monqui, had booked one last show for the year, and it was a band I loved. That's all she'd give up. When they finally announced The Head and The Heart would close out the concert season, with Blind Pilot as an opener, I couldn't contain my excitement. I've loved The Head and The Heart since the first time I heard "Down in the Valley," off of their self-titled debut album.
Pick's Sisters Folk Festival Picks
Last week, we gave you a sneak peek of this year's Sisters Folk Festival lineup. This week, we're back with Pick's Picks — Sisters Folk Festival edition. Gangstagrass — Hip hop meets bluegrass? Yes, that's a thing and is more successful than you might think. Emmy-nominated outfit Gangstagrass features MC hip-hop beats in sync with banjos, fiddles and dobros. These pioneers of the New American sound have earned a reputation for excellent live performances. // Fri., 11:30pm. Sisters Saloon. Sat., 2pm.
Digging Deeper
Travis Ehrenstrom has been a part of the Central Oregon music scene since age 14, attending Sisters High School and taking part in the Americana Project. He remembers playing shows with Mark Ransom and Leif James and other Bend music scene strongholds from a young age, and now continues to evolve as an indie folk-rock artist. But the creative process had been pretty non-existent for Ehrenstrom over the past four or five years, he confesses.
High Levels of Satisfaction
Over the last week, several people have brought up influential post-rockers El Ten Eleven. People are stoked about this show and, clearly, I'm a little late to the party, as the duo has been releasing music together since 2002 and have six self-released albums. Better late than never, I spoke to Kristian Dunn, the band's guitarist and bassist, on the phone in advance of their show at the Volcanic Theatre Pub.
Dream Playlist
For Bend's indie rock lovers, this weekend will go down as one of the best of the summer, thanks to back-to-back performances from alternative rock titans Portugal. The Man Friday night at the Les Schwab Amphitheater and Cold War Kids Saturday night at Oregon Spirit Distillers. In prep for the big weekend, I accumulated a few of my favorite songs from each band, with fingers crossed the bands will play them at the shows. Don't worry, I won't bother listing "Feel It Still," Portugal.
Best Pet Store
Before Julie Hunter started Bend Pet Express in 1993, her dog became very ill. She worked with a vet locally and looked at what she was putting in her dog's body versus what options were available. Her research and continued education resulted in the birth of what would go on to become the Bend Pet Express we all know and love today.
Drink Up
"It takes a huge level of commitment with every step you take with music," Victory Swig bassist Barrett Dash says. "We try to balance our daily schedules, work schedules, recreation schedules—everything people do in Bend— as well as book the gigs and get the most fun shows. It's a lot of work to make it all happen, but worth it." If you're someone who loves live music and lives in the area, odds are, over the last several years, you've seen a Victory Swig show.
Best Local Band
Back in the day, Best Local Band was a category readers could vote for. Past winners included Larry and His Flask, Mosley Wotta and Corner Gospel Explosion. This year, Best Band is a staff pick category, so I'm writing a special "Pick's Picks." Chris Fraser on vocals and lead guitar, Devrett Gupta on bass and Jake Satathite on drums make up power trio Bony Chanterelle. I hung out with the boys at a rehearsal in May, interviewing them ahead of their album release show at Spoken Moto.
Best Place to Work Remotely
Technically, this one should probably have been voted on, instead of being a staff pick. But since I do most of my work as a freelancer, it's clear to me that Spoken Moto is the hub for remote workers in Central Oregon. Whether you're a realtor looking for a spot to meet with clients or a web developer who needs a break from your dark bedroom, Spoken Moto provides the perfect remote office in Bend. Walk into Spoken Moto on a typical weekday and you'll see laptops for miles.
Best Indoor Music Venue
It seems whenever you hear anyone talking about the live music scene in Bend, the words “best music year in Bend ever” escapes their lips. That’s thanks in part to the hardworking people within the industry, busting their behinds to bring you rad musicians. All year long, Volcanic Theatre Pub brings in quality bands, singers, filmmakers and creatives, in an effort to enhance the cultural and musical landscape in Central Oregon.
Stage Mom
The last time I interviewed Jessica Hernandez, things were different. She wasn't married and her 6-month-old daughter Stella hadn't yet made her debut. For the last five or six years, I've seen Hernandez and her band The Deltas perform a handful of times—each time a worthy, sweat-filled dance session. And now with a baby in tow, I don't expect anything different when the band performs at Volcanic.
Irish Heritage
As humans, it could be said that music is our legacy. Altan performs traditional Irish music that ranges from reels and jigs to heartwarming and sensitive old Irish songs. For Altan and founding member Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the traditional music of Ireland is a great heritage that has survived for generations. The band has spread the songs and stories of their heritage from the small town of Donegal to people all across the world.
Best Silver Lining on a City Council Decision
If you've been keeping up with the ongoing, dramatic saga surrounding noise and concerts in the City of Bend, then you know that earlier this year the City Council voted to limit the number of Temporary Change of Occupancy permits. What does this mean to the live music community? The Century Center, one of the primary outdoor music venues in Bend, got hit the hardest, because the decision limits the number of TCOs a building can obtain a year to three.
Best Job (When you don't wanna work in Bend)
In Bend, it's typical to hear someone mutter, "Doesn't anyone work in this town?" Well, friend, why live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth if you're going to sit in an office all day? Many Bendites have found ways to make a living without working a traditional 9 to 5 desk job.
Best Veterinary Clinic
In Bend, we place as high a priority on the health and wellness of our pets as we do on ourselves. It takes a lot to stand out among the pack with a large number of excellent veterinary clinics in town, yet Bend Veterinary Clinic continues their ‘Best of’ win streak by fetching the prize for the fifth year in a row. When you talk to Practice Manager Julie Owens, it becomes easy to see why Bend Vet continues their winning streak and why this year the clinic also won Best Place to Work.
