Peranakan Baroque Reading The Complexity Of Nyonya Porcelain Ware
TUCKED AWAY IN cupboards, largely forgotten by younger generations, collections of Peranakan Chinese porcelain (or Nyonya ware)—including plates, dessert bowls, dishes, teacups, spoons and spoon rests—still have plenty to say. Resplendent in vibrant colours and auspicious symbols, these deserve to be brought into the spotlight. Some items from a collection belonging to my late husband, a Penang Baba who migrated to Australia, offer a good starting place for exploration.
Dreaming In Broome: Of Pearls, Migration And Being "Malay"
The historic multilingual Carnarvon Street sign. Pearl shells were once harvested to make buttons and other items, and form a constant aesthetic presence on the streets of Broome today. DURING MY VISIT to the Broome Historical Museum to learn about its pearling industry, my attention was drawn towards an historic street sign on display.

Edgecumbe on Penang Hill: A Trip up Memory Lane
PERCHED HIGH ON Penang Hill and setback from a road which has a gradient of 45 degrees, sits Edgecumbe. This two-storey bungalow built by Lim Cheng Teik c.1928 is currently derelict, the jungle slowly and relentlessly reclaiming it. Reputed to be haunted, it certainly is worlds away from the former glory of its heyday, when its residents would enjoy the view afforded from the beautiful terrace. I first learned of its existence during a recent stay in Penang.
Places of Worship In Penang Photographed by The Traveller, Jules Claine
JULES CLAINE WAS a French explorer and diplomat who spent a year travelling across Malaysia in 1889 and 1890, photographing and commenting upon all that he saw and encountered here. This he published in Un An En Malaisie (One Year in Malaysia), and gave a paper for the 9th International Congress of Orientalists in London in 1891. He appeared on the cover of the Journal des Voyages, where his travels were featured as the cover story. Sign up now for FREE to access all articles.
Opinion: Ditch your plastic Halloween costumes this year
Halloween might be a season for chills and thrills, but the real horror story lies in the unregulated sweatshops and factories that churn out those plastic-filled costumes. In these spaces, the cost of cheap trends often comes at the expense of human rights and environmental welfare. The terms fashion sustainability, textile waste and greenhouse gas emissions have become the equivalent of horror movie cliches — overused, predictable and increasingly ignored.
Non-Compete Clauses In Singapore And Insights From The Recent Shopee Case - - Singapore
The recent dismissal of Shopee's lawsuit against an ex-employee has shed light on non-compete clauses in Singapore. Generally, a non-compete clause, which is commonly found in employment contracts, imposes restrictions on employees from working for competitors after their current employment ends. The enforceability of such a clause, however, is not absolute. A non-compete clause will only be enforced if it is reasonable and protects a legitimate proprietary interest of the employer.
Travels in Siam: Teak Exploration and Photography - Scandasia
It is not often that ScandAsia publishes research into the historical past of Scandinavia in Asia. But we did on a few occasions. A few years ago, we published an article by Anne C. Tan about a photo album following EAC (East Asiatic Company) executives on an inspection of the Mekong river on a survey for alternative transportation routes to the market. The album ended up in a French library, which is a mystery by itself.

10 email marketing tips from best-selling authors
Authors love email marketing because it gives them a direct communication channel with the people that read or will likely read their books. Your readers share an affinity for your book genre and writing style, which makes marketing less about selling and more about creating a community. But for many authors, getting started can feel overwhelming when you see others with thousands of subscribers.
Travels in Siam and Laos: a lost photo album
A Royal Copenhagen vase portraying the little mermaid has been the genesis of this current research. The vase was presented to Tan Heng Soon, the father of my late husband on his retirement as a comprador with the Danish East Asiatic Company at their Penang, Malaysia place of business. [Digital photo: author’s collection]The company operated at No.3 Weld Quay in George Town, Penang and this comprador’s length of service spanned from 1930-1953 and is inscribed on the base plaque.

The event is a celebration of the iconic lighthouse, which was immortalized in author Hidegarde Swift's 1942 children's book.
Happy to face #Faine 'Star Chamber': @Colvinius
Last night, I was watching 730 on ABC Television. As we can now, I also had my iPad fired up to follow the #abc730 hashtag as the program went to air. With the cryptic words of the recent Jon Faine negative finding from the ABC’s Audience and Consumer Affairs unit still buzzing on my frontal lobes, I was rather amazed to see an interviewer, Leigh Sales, whom I generally admire for the brevity and forensic character of her interview questions, appear to become somebody else.
