By Anne Marie Ward, CEO, Faces and Voices of Recovery UK Dani Garavelli says she's "never written a politically motivated piece." But when a 3,800-word article in the London Review of Books frames the Scottish Drug Consumption Room (DCR) as a progressive solution - while overdose deaths rise, treatment access collapses, and critics are smeared as misinformed - neutrality becomes a myth. This isn't journalism in the public interest. It's narrative alignment with a political project in deep crisis.
A randomized multiplex CRISPRi-Seq approach for the identification of critical combinations of genes
eLife assessment This important study uses CRISPRi to silence multiple effectors in the pathogen, Legionella pneumophila. It provides a technique that will allow researchers to address functional redundancy amongst effectors, a problem that has persisted even after decades of study. The methodology used is convincing, and further improvement (such as using multiple guides per gene) can lead to the identification of novel virulence factors.

Lack of the immune adaptor molecule SARM1 accelerates disease in prion infected mice and is associated with increased mitochondrial respiration and decreased expression of NRF2
Loading metrics Open Access Peer-reviewed Research Article Abstract Prion diseases are a group of fatal, transmissible neurodegenerative diseases of mammals. In the brain, axonal loss and neuronal death are prominent in prion infection, but the mechanisms remain poorly understood. Sterile alpha and heat/Armadillo motif 1 (SARM1) is a protein expressed in neurons of the brain that plays a critical role in axonal degeneration.
Looking Through the Glass Lightly: 2032 Predictions
#Emerging Tech #Science & Tech #Tech Published on December 22, 2021 During times like these, we can find contentment by looking to the future. Very few things in life are truly ‘forever’ including predictions, themselves. Humans are resilient. We can get through any situation when it’s not permanent. I believe in humans and that our future will be brighter than it seems today. Why do I think this? Because of my passion for technology and all the goodness that can come from having it in our lives.
Anne Ward: Support those healing from sexual violence
As February draws to a close and discounted Valentine’s chocolate is harder to find, we are approaching the one-year anniversary of entering our various experiences of isolation under the Stay Home, Stay Safe order. I’m thinking a lot about love and belonging and what they mean during this lonely, difficult time. Not far beneath the shiny, heart shaped veneer of this holiday lurks something more painful.

From Ballyhoo to Tally-ho: 2020 Adventures in Futurism
Like everyone else, I’ve been lurking in the shadows of my mind palace for what feels like forever and a day. Not wanting to be an arbiter of gloom or peddler of fake optimism, I have held back from writing the past few months (publicly) and wrote this piece after encouragement by my colleagues. Living in the weird and future-y cosmos has been a comfortable place for me for as long as I can remember. Years ago I discovered that wearing light was the easiest way to showcase my zest for the future.

William Spain Seismic Observatory
Fordham University’s Rose Hill campus is home to the oldest seismic station in New York City, and one of the oldest in the United States. Installed in the basement of the university’s main administrative building in 1910, it continues to chart seismic activity from all over the world to this day. The station is maintained by Fordham’s physics department, where data is transmitted to the adjacent academic building, Freeman Hall.
Fordham Cemetery
Partially obscured by hedges in the west corner of Fordham University’s Rose Hill campus in The Bronx lies something quite unusual: a burial site with 138 tombstones. Numerous students walk past the cemetery everyday without giving it much thought. The Fordham Cemetery dates all the way back to the 1800s, during the university’s nascent years when it was known as St. John’s College.
Growth hacking in SEO
This project was one of those during which we kept high-fiving constantly because the money was rolling in steadily. When the chemistry is right for both agency and client, magical things can happen. Strong communication between marketing and product development will only benefit sales. It behooves the growth hacker to stay as granular as possible with sales processes (to identify opportunities). The growth challenges we faced were related to the consumer's trust.

Hack a bunny for Easter: A Dr Lucy Rogers maker project
Have you got an object that reminds you of someone when you look at it? Wouldn’t it be nice if they knew you were thinking of them, just with the push of a button? For Easter, I have made an Easter Bunny with a heart that lights up when it receives an “I am thinking of you” message. To return the message, just push its tail. You can link these to as many bunnies as you like. They use mobile phone SIM cards – so no WiFi set-up is required. Just plug in the bunny and it will work.
Growth Science: A Call to Arms
The path from SEO to SSO For more than a decade I’ve been a practitioner of search, an SEO. Before that, I was a web developer. In the last few years my title has extended to the new fangled Growth Hacker… which never felt quite right. Don’t get me wrong; I love growth marketing and it’s what I’ve dedicated my career to- but it never felt like it fit me as a label.

Why it’s GAME ON for Watson Dev Con
If World of Watson (WoW) left you feeling inspired, Watson Dev Con will fill your heart with sheer nerd joy. There is no denying that the Internet of Things (IoT) entry point is exciting, but where we’re going next is even better. Why everyone should be crazy for bots
Bots are the new “It” thing. Also known as chat bots, a web robot, or an Internet bot, bots are merely applications that are able to run automated tasks much faster and more efficiently than a human would. Everyone seems to have gone crazy for bots, and while the tech may seem new to most users, they have actually been around for many years. What is a bot? A bot can be designed to do nearly anything. Things such as make a dinner reservation, order your birthday cake, or reserve an uber.
New York, New York
Tucked away in the heart of Midtown—only a few blocks from its sister park, Greenacre—lies the beautifully minuscule refuge that is Paley Park. Dubbed a "vest-pocket" park, it's just 4,200 sq ft., and serves as a retreat from the daily grind of the urban world that exists just outside of its borders.
