Strong cold front on track and here is what you can expect
The strong front is making it’s way to South Africa and is set to make landfall on Saturday evening. Ahead of the cold front, pre-frontal rain is possible throughout the day on Saturday for the south-western parts of the Western Cape. Another dry week ahead for South Africa
The Western Cape province has been declared a drought disaster area as it faces its worst water crisis in living memory. Rainfall has been below average since 2016 and this dry trend has continued into 2017 as seen on the graph below. Winter rainfall areas can usually expect their first good rainfall for the winter season in May, with an average of just below 70mm at Cape Town International Airport. Unfortunately, rainfall has been far below normal.
Chilly Easter weekend ahead for parts of South Africa
CAPE TOWN - On Wednesday night a cold front made landfall over the south-western Cape and brought much needed rainfall to the region. As the cold front moves eastwards during the course of Thursday, weather clears over the western parts, but deteriorates in the east where a chilly, autumn weekend is likely.
Dineo fizzles out but more rain is on the way
Although tropical cyclone Dineo has been downgraded to a tropical depression since making landfall, its effects were still felt across Mpumalanga and Limpopo where heavy rains and strong winds were experienced on Thursday. Dineo first hit Mozambique, where some areas reported more than 150mm of rain. According to 24hr rainfall observations from 8am on Thursday to 8am on Friday, some areas in the lowveld received close to 100 mm of rainfall.
Christmas Weekend Weather

Take caution along the coastline during Spring Tide
The monthly full moon spring tide peaks with the full moon on Wednesday 14th of December and continues until the 19th of December. Spring Tides happen twice a month and lasts for a few days over each full moon and each new moon, peaking on the day of the full moon and new moon. The twice-monthly spring tides bring higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides. Additionally, stronger than usual rip currents often occur around these times and can be especially dangerous to swimmers.

2016 on its way to breaking another hottest year on record
2015 shattered the record books as the hottest year ever! It seems like 2016 is following in the same footsteps by breaking the record once again. It’s been common refrain to hear that August has yet again, like the first 7 months of 2016, been ranked the hottest August on record. August came in 0.98˚C above the average from 1951-1980, and 0.16˚C above August 2014, the previous record holder. The record keeps 2016 on track to be the hottest year in the books by a fair margin.
Major winter cold front to hit South Africa
Winter is now here in earnest and we are already seeing considerable drops in temperatures with cooler days and chilly nights. However, it was unseasonably warm on Tuesday and Wednesday across the Western and Eastern Cape, as well as along the coastal areas of the Northern Cape due to berg wind conditions. A berg wind is a hot, dry wind blowing off the interior plateau of South Africa, roughly at right angles to the coast.

Two Cold Fronts Bring Stormy Weather
The first cold front makes landfall over south western South Africa on Thursday, spreading cloudy conditions with light rain into the Western Cape and parts of the Northern Cape. A second cold front follows closely behind, bringing stormy weather the Western Cape on Friday. Temperatures will drop significantly from Wednesday to Friday with maximums below 20°C. Not only will it be cold and wet, but winds will strengthen on Thursday with strong winds expected on Friday.
Another heatwave for the Western Cape this weekend
2016 started off in a similar way to 2015, with an almost week long heatwave over a large area of South Africa. January will end off just as hot with another heatwave expected over the south western parts. Good rainfall amounts in mid-January brought relief for drought stricken areas in the Northern Cape and Free State, but not nearly enough to break the on-going drought.
Heatwave to last until weekend
JOHANNESBURG - Monday marks the second day of a heatwave in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the eastern parts of North West. The heatwave is expected to persist until Thursday with maximum temperatures close to 40°C in the north-east of South Africa. This is the second heatwave of the year to hit the country. Citizens have been urged to stay hydrated and those working outdoors have been advised to take water breaks and cool of in the shade or about 30 minutes.
