Plans to relax factory farm planning rules raise concerns for animals, communities and food security
Reports that the UK government is considering relaxing planning rules for factory farms following industry lobbying are deeply concerning. More about Just Transition Factory farming
The false divide between farming and rewilding
On the 18th of March the Government launched its Land Use Framework, reigniting debate about how Britain manages its countryside. But what if we can have the environmental benefits of rewilding, while also producing food and actively managing, rather than abandoning, the land? The notion of pristine wilderness untouched by humans still shapes how we think about conservation. Yet many landscapes, especially in the UK, evolved through long relationships between people, animals, and land management.
What if Melania were the key to defeating Trump?
What if Melania were the key to defeating Trump? How many times have we heard the overused, rarely cited phrase, “Behind every great man is a great woman?” Supposedly, the phrase came about in the 1900s when women’s rights were first becoming reconized, and then popularized in the 60s and 70s during the feminist movement. It means exactly what it says: Behind every great man is a woman supporting, assisting and backing him, making his success possible.
6 Reasons Why You Can’t Do Anything Before Your Scheduled Thing
Today, I had a thing. And I thought to myself, “Self, you have many things you need to accomplish before and after the “the thing”, so you need to get all those other things done in addition to “the thing”. Some people think nothing of doing multiple “things” in a day… and typically, I don’t either. Unless, I have a day off. When I have a thing scheduled on my day off, I have to wait for the thing to come and go before getting other things done.
What will we do if our prayers are answered?
Bad news sometimes creates the best questions. My family and I were recently on the receiving end of some very bad news. Very. Bad. News. The kind of news no one ever wants to get. The kind of news we spend our lives avoiding. The kind of news that causes a spiral of hopelessness, grief, and fear. A close family friend was just diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. The kind that rarely responds to treatment. In other words, the hopeless kind. They and their family are reeling.
My Mental Health is Taking a Hit
But I will not look away. I keep telling myself to stop reading the news. Regardless of how much I love reading The New York Times over my morning coffee, I have to stop reading the news. For a person with anxiety, reading the news is just about the worst thing I can do for my mental health. So, instead, I got a subscription to the local paper. I’ll keep up on local events. The things that directly effect me.
Maybe Christians Didn’t Lost Their Faith
Maybe they’re just women. I initially intended to write this as a single, stand alone story, but once I started unpacking my experiences, I realized this was an entire series of stories just begging to be written. I do not pretend to speak for all Christians, but I do not believe my experiences within the church are unique. There’s a reason Christians are leaving the church in droves. Every now and then, I stumble across stories like these: And I start to feel a little bit guilty. Hi. It’s me.
To Cry or Not to Cry
Please come see me before taking any further action on this matter. Annie Evans · Follow 4 min read · -- Photo by Jakayla Toney on Unsplash Last week, my stepson’s team lost a really important game. A game that would have taken them to the state championship. He, like a lot of his teammates, broke down in tears. And I just about died. Full disclosure, I hate when people cry.
The Perils of Being a Woman
The Perils of Being a Woman Yesterday, I burst into tears while making dinner for myself. Okay, well, I didn’t exactly “burst”. I more seethed with discontent which then manifested itself in tears. (For the love of Peter, Paul, and Mary… why does every single emotion of mine result in tears?! Am I angry? Yes. Let me cry. Am I sad? Yes. Let me cry. Am I overwhelmed and underslept? Yes. Let me cry. Am I happy? Yes. Let me cry. Good Lord, woman… Figure it out.) So, I was crying.
Dear Teacher-Moms
This is not my family. Please... like we would ever be this well put together? (Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash) As a teacher and a stepmom, I often wonder how other teacher moms do it. How do you spend all day every day taking care of little (sometimes big) humans, and then come home to manage more of your own? I have a hard enough time managing myself on the weeks the kids aren't with us.
A Summer for Recovery
By Annie Evans Can we all just take a moment and breathe? Photo by Mohamed Nohassi on Unsplash Today marks the first day of summer vacation. And while I'm excited to have two and a half months all to myself, I also couldn't care less. I don't care to write, or restart my fitness regimen. I don't care to travel or make plans with friends for the summer. I don't care to immerse myself in new cooking...
The Problem with Today’s Youths
We’re not the problem. You’re the problem. I have come to the startling conclusion that with my 41st birthday just a few months away, I am officially old… unhip… out of touch… and dare I say it… probably a little bit “cheugy”… which is a word I had to look up in order to use it. I love my skinny jeans. I wear a side part. I think today’s “youths” dress like hobos. Today’s slang is ridiculous. Cheugy isn’t even a word, and “aesthetics” aren’t an actual thing.
Our children can’t cope - and it’s affecting everyone’s education.
Our education system is one meltdown away from imploding. Earlier this week, I had a child melt down in front of me because sloppy joes were being served for lunch, and the smell of sloppy joes made her physically sick. So, she stood outside the lunchroom, openly weeping, asking me to go through the lunch line for her, while picking out various other items that she could eat for lunch, then handing the tray off to her for her to eat it in the nurse’s office. That’s not even the absurd part.
6 Traits Churches Look for in Their Congregants
Please note: While tattoos are permitted, they are not encouraged. (Photo by Ric Rodrigues: https://www.pexels.com/photo/closed-eyed-man-holding-his-face-using-both-of-his-hands-1309052/) Please Note: This is satire. Meaning this piece purposely uses absurdity, exaggeration, and irony to point out the flaws in today's Christian church. Are you tired of not fitting in with your church? Do you wish you could more easily mold yourself into the type of person churches these days are looking for?
A Catalyst for Deconstruction
By Annie Evans There are a lot of reasons why so many Christians have decided to "deconstruct" their faith more recently. I'm not a fan of trends, and I'm absolutely not a supporter of buzzwords - both of which I saw "Deconstruction" as - a trendy buzzword. But the more I read, and the more I investigated, I noticed a lot of similarities between the struggles I was having with my...
In Lockstep with the Church
Whose authority can we trust? When I initially decided to look into this idea of "deconstruction", I did the first thing anyone with access to the internet would do. I Googled it. A lot of what I came across were academic articles explaining the theory of "deconstruction", and what it actually means. Go a few pages in, however, and you start to come across some Evangelical and Catholic sites bemoaning this recent movement, and explaining why it is potentially harmful and un-Christian.
Deconstructing Church
By Annie Evans Photo by Daniel Tuttle on Unsplash This past winter, I signed up for a subscription to The New York Times, mainly because I found the writing thought-provoking, relevant, and intelligent. I didn't feel like the views of the writers were being pushed down my throat, and I thought the stories provided necessary insights from both sides of an issue. It was a refreshing deviation from the media I had previously been consuming.
UK banks could be investing your money in animal cruelty
Factory farming is the biggest threat animals face, inflicting terrible cruelty on billions of animals across the world. It is also an existential threat to people and the planet: factory farms are a dangerous breeding ground for the next global pandemic, and drive environmental destruction, fuelling our climate crisis. There is a global urgency to make systemic changes for animal welfare and a better future.
Switching to a more ethical bank
Factory farms pose an existential threat to people and the planet. They are a dangerous breeding ground for the next global pandemic, and drive environmental destruction, fuelling our climate crisis. Banks have trillions of pounds tied up in companies that are linked to factory farming, like animal producers, feed companies, supermarkets, and restaurants.
Redlining and Hotter Neighborhoods: How Racist Housing Policies Created Urban Heat Islands
All of us will experience some effects of climate change, but the burdens won’t be felt equally. Marginalized communities are more likely to experience the worst effects of climate change, especially if they live in low-income or vulnerable areas.

You can't address an envelope? Why don't we just set out a welcome mat for the apocalypse?
By Annie Evans My 17-year-old stepdaughter will be graduating from high school in June. In May, she'll be graduating from the local community college with her AA degree under her belt. She's on the A honor roll, and has managed to get accepted into one of our state's more exclusive universities. She's a bright kid, but she doesn't know how to address...
How I gave myself permission to stop suppressing my intuition
You’re perfectly normal. Mostly. Photo by Amanda Dalbjörn on Unsplash Are you suppressing your intuition? When I first saw that headline on Twitter, it made me stop scrolling. Suppressing my intuition? Duh. All day. Every day. In every circumstance ever. Suppressing my intuition had become how I lived my life. Don’t think too deeply. Shrug it off. Remind yourself you’re over-reacting. Don’t call attention to your “instincts”. Ignore that you have any instincts.
