When I Fell: Victims of Syria’s War
Mohammad Fahd, 20, was hit by a landmine, an explosive device hidden or concealed designed to destroy or disable when a person steps on it. “I was on my way to the bakery to buy bread with my father and sister when I stepped on a landmine. My father and sister were killed instantly. I was 18… I want to go anywhere. Europe, Canada. I need to get out of here because one day I would like to have a family.” (Annie Sakkab) On Nov.

In Jordan, sweet Ramadan treats unite refugees and locals
Jordan is host to nearly 750,000 registered refugees, the overwhelming majority from the seven-year conflict in neighbouring Syria, but with significant populations also from Iraq, Yemen and Sudan. The women have come together at a community centre in the Jordanian capital Amman, run by UNHCR- the UN Refugee Agency – and its partner the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (Johud).
Poorest Syrian refugees facing ruin due to underfunding
“When I came to Jordan, I didn’t have a single penny on me,” he explained. “I was wearing only underwear, and covered in a bedsheet. My physical condition was very bad.” Once inside Jordan, Saif joined his elderly mother Mona, who had fled their home in Damascus shortly after his arrest. She also suffered from ill health having survived throat cancer, and both mother and son required medication which they weren’t always able to secure.
Quadruplets a joyous handful for Syrian refugee mother
“The first echo showed only three,” said the 30-year-old refugee from Dara’a in southern Syria. “When I went back, they said they are quadruplets – there’s one more. I got a big surprise.” Raising her four daughters – Ayat, Ghena, Sarah and Sali – is a huge challenge, especially as a refugee in Jordan struggling by on the meagre wages her husband Ali earns at a local car wash. Sometimes the parents skip meals to make sure they have enough money to buy food, clothes and diapers for the girls.
Jordan health cost hikes leave Syrians in dire need
Two of Hamed’s children have thalassaemia, a hereditary blood disorder that requires regular transfusions and costly drugs to manage the side effects. “Because of the war, and the difficulty of reaching hospitals to secure medication, treatment and blood for my children, I had to leave Syria,” he said.
School offers Syrian girls in Jordan the chance to flourish
“[On Fridays] we wake up and do nothing. We just stay at home. School is way better than home,” she explains. This attitude may not be typical of most kids her age, but after she and her family fled Syria’s conflict in 2013 and spent the first few years as refugees in Jordan scrapping by on their dwindling savings, for a time it seemed that Izdihar may not get the chance to go to school at all.
Freed Iraqi boy settles into new life in Canada
Emad spent three years in captivity after he and his family, who are Yazidi, were abducted by extremists in August 2014. Initially taken with his family, he was forcibly separated from them after a few months. His mother and siblings managed to escape sometime last year, but knew nothing of Emad’s fate.
Exhibition poses questions about the distinctive vision of women in photojournalism
We came together intuitively; visual storytellers seeking support from others with similar experiences – namely, Canadian women just past the dawn of their careers navigating a field that remains, for the large part, a male domain. That we’re far from the only ones to feel the need to band together is telling of the enduring gender imbalance in photography. Female-driven initiatives are creeping up here and abroad.
Canadian entrepreneur invests millions in Syrian refugees
Canadian entrepreneur invests millions in Syrian refugees A life-long entrepreneur and now CEO of an appliance company, Estill decided around 18 months ago to sponsor Syrian refugees fleeing their war-ravaged homeland. After doing the rough math, he estimated he could help bring more than 200 Syrians to Guelph. It was no mean feat, coming in at a cost of Canadian $1.5 million.
Christian community welcomes Syrian family to Canada
By Leyland Cecco and Annie Sakkab in Brandon, Manitoba | 10 January 2017 | Español | Français | عربي In November 2016, as cold winds swept across the Canadian prairie, Najwa and Reyad Al Hamoud welcomed their third child into the world. From her hospital bed, Najwa sent out a flurry of excited text messages announcing the birth of her daughter to a new, unlikely group friends – members of a Hutterite colony half an hour away in Brandon, Manitoba.
Syrian family find safe harbour on the shores of Canada
As far back as Ahmad can remember, at least to his great-grandfather, the Ayash family lived and worked in Dara’a, Syria. But months after he opened an engineering office in the city, the stability of the life he shared with his wife, Fatmeh, and their children suddenly disappeared. Staccato bursts of gunfire, marking the beginning of Syria’s protracted conflict which has uprooted more than 11 million residents, woke the five young children at night.
Syrian violinist helps Canadian community hear his song
“I just followed my heart,” he says. “It always told me: ‘You are a musician and you can't do anything else'.” The young violinist arrived alone on the rainy archipelago of Canada’s west coast in February, 2016 – on his birthday – as one of the 400 Syrian refugees resettled to Victoria province. Before his arrival, Sari’s life had overflowed with music.
Like it or not, Sir. John A.’s story is the story of Canada
zoom Flash back to 1891. After the prime minister’s death Wilfrid Laurier, then the leader of the federal Liberal party, and later Canada’s first French-Canadian prime minister, said of his Conservative opponent: “It may be said without any exaggeration whatever, that the life of Sir John Macdonald, from the date he entered Parliament, is the history of Canada.” It is true.
Softer approach to fatherhood may have legs: Joel Rubinoff
So I’m driving Max, 7, back from swimming lessons and discussing his stellar report card — he can now officially swim two metres unassisted — when the tiny plastic frog he won at a community picnic two years ago breaks off at the foot. “I command you to fix it!” shrieks Max, who has autism and ongoing issues with flexibility. “Pull the car over right now. I COMMAND YOU!” He commands me?
Prime minister statues have no place on our campus
Ah, Halloween — that time of year when ghosts come out and white folks dress up as Indians. So this year, some of us Indians decided to join in and dress up as Indians too. No doubt I would look great in one of those off-the-shelf “Pocahottie” bimbo costumes. But since I am an Indigenous historian working in Canada, I decided I would go as Big Bear and invite my colleague to be Poundmaker. It’s about representation. And education.
