Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

This is my first full time journalist position. I'm a recovering attorney and digital organizer.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! I completed my college applications on a typewriter in the guidance counselor's office.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

I'm still learning what this means, but I know it is more than being an "observer" from Fringe simply watching from the shadows.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

laptop, Iphone, Shure mic, headphones

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Last year I had a piece about voting machine reforms that was a labor of love and a lesson in writing more complex pieces.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I recently got a pitch for a very cool book that is coming out which is really relevant to the current pandemic moment.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I don't know the worst pitch, I have just gotten some pitches that are totally unrelated to anything I cover.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Dame Magazine and Truthout

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

The most common misperception is that electoral justice is simply voting rights and elections.
