Anthony Covacevich Archives – Rio Grande Guardian
The Rio Grande Guardian was the first online newspaper to launch on the South Texas border, starting out in July, 2005. It is still the market leader, setting the pace and breaking news often before traditional media outlets.
Covacevich: Acuña Garza is right. We need to increase RGV literacy rates. – Rio Grande Guardian
I agree with Dr. Ida Acuna Garza when she said we need to increase the literacy rate in the Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Garza worked with me while we both were working for Hidalgo County. We realized a need for mortgage funding for families with B credit rating. With the assistance of Valley Mortgage Company , Estrada Hinojosa Inc.
Covacevich: A Man Shouting in the Desert of the RGV – Rio Grande Guardian
Mr. Juan Maldonado was very passionate about the injustice and discrimination in the Rio Grande Valley and his passion could be heard throughout South Texas. I believe that this shouting was also heard by businesses and institutions. It was during this time that professors from then Pan American University heard the cries and decided to do something about it.
Covacevich: My experience working with undocumented migrants from Mexico – Rio Grande Guardian
I read with great interest the recent article from economist M. Ray Perryman in the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service titled “Mexican Trade.” I have always found his articles very insightful and full of useful information. I agree with him on the importance of Mexico as an economic partner of Texas. As a migrant working the peach and apricot fields in Fresno, California I got to interact with many undocumented migrants from Mexico.
Villarreal: How Nonprofits can capitalize on strategic partnerships – Rio Grande Guardian
Nonprofit organizations are continuously challenged with limited resources and highly competitive funding opportunities for program sustainability and growth. However, in my experience, nonprofits oftentimes overlook the great value of community support and strategic partnerships, in alignment with a nonprofit’s mission, to leverage additional funding.
Hinojosa: Retired teachers deserve a long overdue cost-of-living adjustment – Rio Grande Guardian
I encourage all Texans to vote for Proposition 9 and support our retired Texas teachers. The approval of this proposition in November will provide a much-needed Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) to certain Teacher Retirement System (TRS) members. It has been two decades since our TRS beneficiaries received a COLA, making this proposition long overdue.
Covacevich: Dr. Nevárez's take on how UTPA came about brought back memories – Rio Grande Guardian
It was with great emotion and memories that I read the recent article in the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service about Dr. Miguel Nevárez’s recollections on how and why UT-Rio Grande Valley came about. Dr. Nevárez, president of Pan American University and later UT-Pan American, was the greatest friend a student had. He always had the interest of the student body at hand. He was vice president of student affairs when the UT System wanted to merger with Pan American.
Covacevich: The case for merging Valley’s three MPOs
I have been reading, with great interest, the different opinions on the Metropolitan Planning Organization merger issue. I would like to remind the people of the Rio Grande Valley that two previous merger issues have been approved with great benefits to the region.
