Nashville Predators: A Look At The Michael Del Zotto Trade

Nashville Predators: A Look At The Michael Del Zotto Trade

thefarmclub.net — This time they addressed their struggling offense the only way they know how - by adding another defenseman. Coming to Nashville is 23-years old New York Rangers' defenseman Michael Del Zotto, the player long believed to be on his way out of New York - it was just a matter of who would take him and what they would get in return. The return was 29-year old Kevin Klein, and if it wasn't for this trade these two would have nothing in common. Klein is you typical stay-at-home defenseman, whose career high in goals is four (4).

Jeff Skinner Climbing To Elite Status

Jeff Skinner Climbing To Elite Status

thefarmclub.net — Since winning the Calder Trophy for being the league's top rookie three years ago, it has been a rocky road for Carolina Hurricanes' winger Jeff Skinner. After being drafted seventh overall in the 2010 draft, Skinner went on to score 63 points (31 G, 32 A) in his rookie campaign, beating out Logan Couture and Michael Grabner for the honors. Injuries have prevented him from playing a full season since that year, missing a total of 24-games throughout the previous two seasons. Skinner was forced to miss some time again this season, but the season he is having has put him on pace to put his name back in with the likes of the league's best goal scorers.

Jon Gillies Set To Shine For Team USA In World Juniors

Jon Gillies Set To Shine For Team USA In World Juniors

thefarmclub.net — After the performance that John Gibson put in net during last year's World Junior Hockey Championships, you have to feel almost sorry for the goalie to follow him this year. Until you watch Jon Gillies play. The backup to Gibson last season, Gillies is set to be the next star in net wearing the Red, White, and Blue during the World Juniors. During the 2010 World Juniors, Jack Campbell emerged as the go-to guy for the U.S., and help lead the team to the first gold medal since the 2004 WJC.

Was Ilya Kovalchuk Wrong?

Was Ilya Kovalchuk Wrong?

thefarmclub.net — Ilya Kovalchuk shocked the hockey world and retired from the NHL after 11 seasons in the league. The move came with obvious backlash, most notably Jeremy Roenick's rant on twitter. Studiest thing iv heard since Aaron Hernandez .. Kovalchuk retiring !!! Is he out of his mind??? Something is fishy Uwill all see now why I have talked negatively about kovalchuk !!! He doesn't want to play for the devils and he'll end up in the KHL!!! Kovalchuk is as selfish as they come!!!! I'm appalled. I feel bad for all u devils fans. U deserve better than that!!

With Cole's Debut, A New Era Begins

With Cole's Debut, A New Era Begins

thefarmclub.net — Over the last 20 years, the City of Pittsburgh has laid dormant, waiting to explode into a baseball frenzy once more. The signs of pending eruptions have been far and few in between, but the previous two years have shown more seismic activity than any point on a regular basis since the early 90s. Tuesday night will give the City a chance to explode, as much touted prospect Gerrit Cole makes his Major League debut. The Stephen Strasburg-like prospect, sans the hype, gives the Pirates and the City that arm, 20 years in the making.

Playoffs Show Patience With Goalies Payoff

Playoffs Show Patience With Goalies Payoff

thefarmclub.net — It's the sports most important position. It begins and ends with you. You can even make the argument that you are the most important player in any team sport. You are a goaltender, with the pressure of the team's outcome rests on your shoulders, night after night, shot after shot. So with the special importance placed on goaltenders, that should equal to teams stocking up on them in the biggest pipeline available to them - the draft - right? Wrong. In fact in the previous 15 drafts (going back to 1997), there has only been 27 goalies drafted in the first round.

End Game: John Tavares' Experience A Valuable One

End Game: John Tavares' Experience A Valuable One

thefarmclub.net — Even if John Tavares' first shot at the playoffs didn't go as he wanted, he will take away something just as valuable, the sting of defeat. The Hart Trophy finalist finished the series with a modest five points (3 G, 2 A), including the game winning goal in game four, but it will be the sting of loss that will be the focal part of his off-season. In what has become a right of passage in this league, it has almost become a necessity to lose in the playoffs your first time around. Is it ideal for any player? No.

Should the Anaheim Ducks trade for Dan Girardi?

Should the Anaheim Ducks trade for Dan Girardi?

pucksofafeather.com — With the Anaheim Ducks in the middle of an amazing season, one that has them on top of the NHL standings, the brain trust of general manager Bob Murray and his staff to determine what - if anything - they need to add or move in order to improve their chances at winning the Stanley Cup. Trading at the deadline, or at any point in the season, is a sticky situation even for a team doing as well as the Ducks. Move the wrong piece, chemistry could be affected and the team could suffer.

Sochi Olympics: 2008 Draft Set To Make Impact

Sochi Olympics: 2008 Draft Set To Make Impact

thefarmclub.net — The 2003 NHL Draft is widely believed to be one of the best draft classes in recent history - if not ever. In my books, the 2008 Draft has the potential to produce one of the best crop of defenseman to come the draft in quite some time. Some of the greatest of the draft will get a chance to shine this Olympics in the coming weeks. Ten total players from the 2008 NHL Draft will play for their respective countries. The list is headlined by Drew Doughty, now a two time Olympian.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Moving Forward By Standing Still

Pittsburgh Pirates: Moving Forward By Standing Still

foreverourpastime.mlblogs.com — With pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training for the Pittsburgh Pirates, it 'officially' wipes last season's plate clean. For once, that could be looked at as a bad thing, as they made the playoffs for the first time in 21-years. But no matter how good the past was, you can't succeed in the future if you are living in said past. So no matter how much Pirates' fans want to build off of 2013, 2014 must stand on its own for the team to become successful. So what are realistic expectations heading into the season? A division title?

Pittsburgh Pirates: Team Goes Old School With Catcher Position

Pittsburgh Pirates: Team Goes Old School With Catcher Position

foreverourpastime.mlblogs.com — One of the best stories from the Pittsburgh Pirates' 2013 season was the re-emergence of Russell Martin. On a downturn statistically the three previous years before landing with the Pirates, Martin completely turned back the clock and was the team's quiet savior from behind the plate. Martin was signed to a two-year contract during last off-season, finally giving the Pirates something they had lacked since Jason Kendall - a bonafide backstop. Martin was inmpressive at the plate, but what he did defensively easily put him right up there with NL MVP Andrew McCutchen as the team's most valuable player.

MLB: The Evolution of The Left Field Position

MLB: The Evolution of The Left Field Position

foreverourpastime.mlblogs.com — Over the weekend the New York Yankees continued their big spending, this time by giving a contract to one of their own - signing outfielder Brett Gardner to a four-year $52 million contract extension with a club option for the 2019 season. Gardner 's contract got me thinking, as I had mixed emotions about the extension. The Yankees giving a contract like this isn't surprising but a player like Gardner getting a contract with the AAV of $13 million is a bit shocking. It also got me thinking about when I started watching baseball and how the left field position was then in the late-90s/early 2000s when Barry Bonds and other players were roaming the field.

2013-14 NHL Trade Deadline Feature: Columbus Blue Jackets

mynhltraderumors.com — Written by Anthony Murphy and can be followed on twitter at @AMurphyTRT The Columbus Blue Jackets came out of nowhere last season and gave the Western Conference a run for their money before just missing the playoffs. General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen aligned his team perfectly, adding sniper Marian Gaborik, all the while keeping the three first round picks they had in a talent rich 2013 Draft. In the offseason, Kekalainen added a new face for their franchise, former Boston Bruins' winger and Stanley Cup champion - Nathan Horton.
