Injuries have prevented him from playing a full season since that year, missing a total of 24-games throughout the previous two seasons. Skinner was forced to miss some time again this season, but the season he is having has put him on pace to put his name back in with the likes of the league's best goal scorers.

On a downturn statistically the three previous years before landing with the Pirates, Martin completely turned back the clock and was the team's quiet savior from behind the plate. Martin was signed to a two-year contract during last off-season, finally giving the Pirates something they had lacked since Jason Kendall - a bonafide backstop. Martin was inmpressive at the plate, but what he did defensively easily put him right up there with NL MVP Andrew McCutchen as the team's most valuable player.

Gardner 's contract got me thinking, as I had mixed emotions about the extension. The Yankees giving a contract like this isn't surprising but a player like Gardner getting a contract with the AAV of $13 million is a bit shocking. It also got me thinking about when I started watching baseball and how the left field position was then in the late-90s/early 2000s when Barry Bonds and other players were roaming the field.
