Antonia Kidman remembers her dad: 'His death has caused me to change how I live my life'
There is something about walking along the bush tracks of the Harbour foreshore that reminds me of my dear Dad. A strong memory of my relationship with him is of our walks together. I grew up in the area where we currently live and I regularly walk along these trails. Since his death, I've discovered it is not a picture or memorial that connects me to him. Rather, it is the smell, sounds and familiarity of this place that makes me feel he is still with me.
Antonia Kidman: 'After six kids, I'm facing a new family dilemma'
Maybe I'm becoming commitment phobic. I've been toying with the idea of getting a dog for years. We were on the cusp of getting one before we moved to Singapore, then it was put on hold because more babies came along and our lives were busy enough adapting to a new country. So now that we're back in Australia and living in a house with a good size garden, the subject is back on the agenda… and I'm stalling. I know why, too. I'm scared of the commitment.
Antonia Kidman: 'Six things that have helped me adapt to this new normal'
Back in another lifetime, before this age of social distancing and lockdowns, Monday was my favourite day of the week. It hasn't always been the case, but it became so because of the intensity of living with lots of people. Don't get me wrong, I signed up to a large family. I love the buzz and frenetic pace of life, but I do like the undulations.
Antonia Kidman: 'What I'll miss when the lockdowns are lifted'
The black cloud that's been hovering over us for the past month is finally starting to lift. The first glimpses of freedom are beginning to shine through. It's exciting, but scary too. There's a lot riding on our recovery plan working. I want it to work because, like so many other Australians, I want our lives to go back to what they were. Yet I'm cautious about managing my expectations, as I don't want to be disappointed. I don't know if I have the mental stamina to cope if we have to go backwards.
Antonia Kidman: 'The double-edged sword of starting afresh'
I have love/hate relationship with change. I need it, I thrive on it, I seek it out, but at the same time I cannot wait for its intensity to dissipate so I can relax into a more comfortable zone. For someone who relishes routine and structure and tends towards sensitively, it pays to occasionally have my feathers ruffled by the unknown.
Antonia Kidman: 'The bittersweet feeling of coming home from a life abroad'
It is a bittersweet feeling. Relocating to Sydney after almost a decade in Singapore triggers all sorts of emotions. Usually at this time of year we are the ones who farewell good friends as they move onto the next location. It is a part of life in the revolving door expat community of Singapore, and we've learnt to adapt to the loss and emptiness that follows when close friends move on. The flipside is that although saying goodbye is a definitive feature of expat life, so too is saying hello.
The family Christmas tradition Antonia Kidman won't be giving up
A few years back, I had a realisation about the concept of 'obligation' and the role it plays in our lives. Recognising our obligations is a part of growing up. It's the transformation from being a fairly self-centred and egocentric person to thinking more inclusively about the lives of others. Of course, this sense of responsibility hit me with full force when I became a parent, and from this point on, it continued to grow – albeit in a less confronting and shocking way.
Antonia Kidman: 'The career switch that's completely enlivened me'
Ten years ago, I left a fulfilling media career in Australia and moved to Singapore with four young children. I had decided to re-marry, and my husband-to-be had been living and working in Singapore for the best part of a decade. As I had not lived overseas since my early 20s, I was keen for a change and rather than he relocate to Sydney, we decided that I would move to Singapore so our children and I could experience life in South East Asia.
ANTONIA KIDMAN: "You have the right to expect and assume respect in all your relationships."
This letter is to my younger self, but on reflection, it is as much a letter to my current self because this knowledge and advice is still relevant today. At fifteen, I remember feeling plagued by self-consciousness and doubt. This meant I tended to stay in my comfort zone in terms of who I would mix with, the things I would do and the aspirations I had for myself both personally and professionally. Self-doubt and seeking the approval of others can be crippling, as I came to discover.
