Financial Conditions and Monetary Policy
The Bank of England’s April 2026 Monetary Policy Report placed significant weight on the tightening in UK financial conditions as a reason for holding Bank Rate unchanged. This blog asks what exactly has tightened and why that matters for the MPC’s reaction function. TL;DR: UK financial conditions tightened sharply in March, but the tightening has not been broad-based.
War Bonds Not The Solution to Financing Increased Defence Spending
Panellists argued that, in the short term, a permanent rise in defence spending should be funded by higher taxes and/or lower non-defence spending in the UK and by higher borrowing in the EU. Two thirds of the UK panel favoured higher taxes and/or lower non-defence spending, citing the UK’s elevated debt burden and the permanence of defence spending. Two thirds of the EU panel instead favoured higher borrowing, with several proposing the the issuance of EU debt.
What Affects the Most UK Aggregate and Regional Productivity?
The disparities are significant. London contributes 23.7 per cent of UK output while comprising a small share of the UK’s land area, reflecting its high population and economic density. Output per job in London is 28.7 per cent higher than in the South-East, the second most productive region, and 64.4 per cent higher than in Wales. These differences reflect deep-rooted specialisation.
How Should We Pay for Increased Defence Spending?
06 February, 2026 12 min read The UK needs a sustained increase in defence spending. Geopolitical tensions have intensified, and the demand for military capability and readiness has risen accordingly. These pressures are unlikely to prove temporary. Last year, the UK spent around 2.3 per cent of its GDP on defence, around £66 billion. The government has committed to raising defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2027, with an ambition to reach 3.5 per cent by 2035.
State Pension Triple Lock is Unsustainable and Must Go
The coalition government introduced the triple lock in 2011. It ensures the state pension rises each year by CPI inflation, average earnings growth, or 2.5 per cent, whichever is the highest. On paper, this may sound like a useful safeguard against pensioner poverty, but in practice it creates a one-way ratchet. The state pension can never fall in real terms, but it can rise in real terms. The flaw is self-evident.
