Organic periostracum preserved in Cretaceous ammonoids from the Andean Neuquén Basin - Communications Biology
Abstract Exceptionally preserved 135-million-year-old ammonoids from the Neuquén Basin at the Andean foothills revealed a fossilised structure never recorded before. Ammonoids are cephalopods that inhabited the oceans for about 400 million years until they became extinct 66 million years ago. Their shells are composed of aragonitic layers bounded externally by an organic periostracum.
Calcite Tailoring by Limpets: The Prismatic and Acicular-Foliated Microstructures of Members of The Nacellidae
1. Introduction Click to copy section linkSection link copied! The first general account of molluscan shell microstructures was provided by Bøggild. (1) Despite relying on optical microscopy, his work revealed the wide array of microstructures produced by molluscs. This repertoire expanded further with the advent of electron microscopy techniques, (2−5) reaching at least twelve basic microstructural types composed of either calcite or aragonite.

Weight-loss maintenance is accompanied by interconnected alterations in circulating FGF21-adiponectin-leptin and bioactive sphingolipids
Highlights • Diet-induced weight loss (WL) transiently increases GDF15 and C16:0-C18:0 ceramides • Sustained WL leads to reduced FGF21, leptin, ceramides, and S1P and increased adiponectin • Weight maintainers and regainers exhibit distinct metabokine-sphingolipid alterations • Clinically, these alterations associate with changes in cardiometabolic health outcomes Summary Weight loss is often followed by weight regain.
Organic macromolecules bind a significant proportion of the precursor calcium for nacre formation.
Abstract The mechanism of nacre formation in gastropods involves a vesicular system that transports organic and mineral precursors from the mantle epithelium to the mineralization chamber. Between them lies the surface membrane, a thick organic structure that covers the mineralization chamber and the forming nacre. The surface membrane is a dynamic structure that grows by the addition of vesicles on the outer side and recedes by the formation of surface membranes on the inner side.

Helical microstructures in molluscan biomineralization are a biological example of close packed helices that may form from a colloidal liquid crystal precursor in a twist--bend nematic phase
Abstract We demonstrate that nature has produced a close-packed helical twisted filamentous material in the biomineralization of the mollusk. In liquid crystals, twist–bend nematics have been predicted and observed. We present and analyze evidence that the helical biomineral microstructure of mollusk shells may be formed from such a liquid-crystal precursor.
Fat-Secreted Ceramides Regulate Vascular Redox State and Influence Outcomes in Patients With Cardiovascular Disease:
Abstract Background Obesity is associated with increased cardiovascular risk; however, the potential role of dysregulations in the adipose tissue (AT) metabolome is unknown. Objectives The aim of this study was to explore the role of dysregulation in the AT metabolome on vascular redox signaling and cardiovascular outcomes.
The bee Tetragonula builds its comb like a crystal
1. Introduction The geometry of the bee comb has for centuries astonished those who have examined it [1,2]. Many studies have concentrated on understanding how honeybees make almost perfectly hexagonal cells [3–6]. But beyond its hexagonal packing of neighbouring cells, the overall structure of the bee comb is equally interesting. An example is the Southeast Asian and Australian stingless bee Tetragonula [7–12].
Metabolomics analysis identifies different metabotypes of asthma severity
AbstractIn this study, we sought to determine whether asthma has a metabolic profile and whether this profile is related to disease severity. We characterised the serum from 22 healthy individuals and 54 asthmatics (12 mild, 20 moderate, 22 severe) using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry-based metabolomics.
