The Southern root-knot nematode (SRKN), Meloidogyne incognita, is a serious pest on peppers (Capsicum spp.) both in the United States and worldwide (Di Vito et al. 1985; Ros-Ibáñez et al. 2014; Thies et al. 1998, 2008). Growing nematode tolerant and/or resistant pepper cultivars is an alternative to avoid serious damage and/or nematode reproduction.
1 INTRODUCTION Plant-parasitic nematodes are among the most important soil-borne pathogens limiting crop productivity. A decade ago, crops' annual unachieved economic potential due to plant-parasitic nematodes was estimated at $173 billion globally and $13 billion in the USA (Elling, 2013). Processing tomato is one of the top 10 California commodities, grown on about 245,000 acres with a 2021 value of US$1.18 billion (https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/Statistics/).
