Brussels is moving to ban street advertising by fossil-fuel firms – the EU officials who live there should take note
Last week, Elsene became the fifth municipality to vote for an end to fossil-fuel advertising, joining Saint-Gilles, Jette, Schaerbeek and Molenbeek. Four of those five votes came in the space of just four months, and together, these municipalities are home to roughly 370,000 people: one-third of the Brussels-Capital Region’s population. All five are making the same demand: that the Brussels region bans fossil-fuel advertising across the entire city, from metro stations to regional roads.
[Opinion] EU-Latin America summit will be an environmental car crash
Opinion By Audrey Changoe and Anuna De Wever Brussels, Today, 11:02 Ahead of next week's (17-18 July) EU summit with Latin American and Caribbean leaders, the European Commission has launched its new strategy to strengthen relations with Latin America. Fast-tracking free trade deals with the region to secure access to Latin America's raw materials for economic competitiveness is part of the strategic package. EU leaders should do their climate homework and act
Between January and May 2019, Youth for Climate organised weekly strikes for the climate in several Belgian cities. Tens of thousands of youth took to the streets to demand climate action and climate justice. Our aim was to get Belgium, the EU and the world to realise that we’re in a climate emergency. Our demand was that political leaders take the climate actions needed to safeguard our future.
Fridays for Future: „We don’t want your hope. We want you to take action.“
It started in front of the Swedish Parliament, on the 20th of August – a regular school day. Greta sat with her painted sign and some homemade flyers. This was the first school strike ever. From then on, Fridays wouldn’t be regular school days any longer. The rest of us, and many more alongside us, picked it up in Australia, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, New Zealand, Uganda. Today the climate strike will take place all around the world. This movement had to happen, we didn’t have a choice.
