Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I took a job as a copy editor at my college's student newspaper with no intention of becoming a journalist. I just liked fixing errors!

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Helping a community to understand itself more fully, empowering citizens to engage in democracy, and telling true, worthwhile stories.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My iPhone is my most indispensable tool -- it's the way I access Twitter and email most often, and I also use it for photos, video and audio.

Why did you become a journalist?

I'd always loved to write, and I had a healthy curiosity about the world that couldn't be satisfied any other way. This job is a privilege.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm proud of my first magazine feature article, published this spring. It started as a class project, and I pitched it freelance!

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write as much as possible -- and know that it's going to take a while to get where you want to be. Don't be discouraged.
