Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first big job was working with Inquisitr.com. I was privileged to have the chance to learn from their staff.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! The feel and the sound of a typewriter carry a special nostalgia. There's nothing quite like it.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has made news more accessible, but I also believe it has brought a subjective err to reporting.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means I get a shot at making my words matter.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I once wrote a story featuring the hashtag... purpledrank. I giggled the whole way through the article.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is the best way to contact me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Google Trends, Google Analytics, WordPress, Grammarly, the internet, and more.

What's your favorite social network?

I enjoy Facebook and Instagram when it comes to digital leisure, but Twitter and LinkedIn are my go-to, work-centered social media outlets.

Who do you wish followed you?

Earnest Hemingway, Emily Dickinson, and David Attenborough would be cool to add to my list of followers.

Why did you become a journalist?

I have an insatiable need to learn more. Journalism gives me a lucrative outlet from which to launch a continuous effort for more input.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but I got a small internship working with my town's local newspaper.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I am proud of my accomplishments as a whole. The ability to support my family with my art is an exceptional feeling.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I am quicker to respond to a pitch in the afternoon.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

The best pitch is always one that forces me to learn something new.

What's your favorite drink?

Water is a necessity for life, and it just so happens to be my favorite drink.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I spend a lot of quality time with my closest friends and family. I also love to be outside with my dog, Rico.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

The most common issue I encounter is a lack of respect. There are too many people who don't think writing is a "real" job.
