Oil Crops Outlook: Soybean Production Soars on Record Yield, Acreage
USDA’s Crop Production report this month indicated an increase in 2018/19 soybean production of 107 million bushels to 4.693 billion. A higher U.S. yield forecast was responsible, which climbed to a record 52.8 bushels per acre from 51.6 bushels last month. The 2018/19 demand outlook for soybeans, however, is changed minimally due solely to a 10-million-bushel increase for the crush forecast to 2.07 billion.
Arkansas Soybeans: Cash in on Free Nematode Sampling
Thanks to the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board and Dr. Travis Faske, who is cooperating with us, the Arkansas Nematode Diagnostic Lab will waive the assay fee for soybean fields for the 2018 season. As in years past, we will be accepting soil samples for nematode assay from: Please indicate the specific crop on the form.
Arkansas Soybeans: Weak Basis Levels and Storage Considerations
A number of questions have been asked in regard to the extremely weak soybean basis. The table below includes an example of current soybean basis for a Mississippi river terminal elevator. Soybean basis levels at harvest have not been this depressed since 2008. An unusually weak or negative basis at harvest can be the result of large production and the demands it places on storage and transportation. In August, USDA forecast a record large U.S. soybean crop of 4.586 billion bushels.
Arkansas Soybeans: Harvest Aid Products and Timing
With the 2018 soybean season here in Arkansas starting to wind down, we’re starting to get calls about what is the proper timing for harvest aid applications and what products work the best. With the weedy fields I’ve seen driving across the State due to either preemerge herbicides not being activated early in the season, or the poor control from post-herbicide applications, we could potentially see more harvest aids applied this fall to help with harvesting our soybean crop.
Minnesota Soybeans: Japanese Beetles Feeding - What Should You Do?
In parts of southeastern Minnesota Japanese beetle has been actively feeding on soybean. These large beetles with shiny green- and copper-colored bodies, chew small holes in the leaves leaving a lace-like appearance. Japanese beetles will also feed leaves and flowers of many other plants, including silks of corn. Japanese beetle abundance and activity is most intense through July and August, but some individuals will remain active into fall.
Arkansas Soybeans: Protect Crops from Nematodes in Old Cotton Fields
Soybean test strips show the effects of root knot nematodes on unprotected soybeans, left side, and plants in soil treated with a preplant application of nematicide. Photo: John Rupe, University of Arkansas Thousands of acres of soybeans in eastern Arkansas are under attack from a tiny pest against which they have little or no natural defenses, said John Rupe, professor of plant pathology for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
