Requesting endorsement for arxiv from future professor as a high-school graduate
I finished high-school, and would like to publish articles on arxiv. I got into university, and found out that a professor of the institue of mathematics is submitting papers to the site. I start my first semester next month, and do not know him, however I would like to publish an article this week. Is it a good idea to ask for endorsement from him? If so, what is the “best” way to ask?
graduate school - "I've somehow convinced everyone that I'm actually good at this" - how to effectively deal with Imposter Syndrome - Academia Stack Exchange
Before I met my roommate, I thought that I was one of the most intelligent people that I've ever met, pretentious, I know, but just being honest. When the material was upper-level undergrad or graduate level, I studied, but even at a top tier university, I got amazing grades with much less effort than most of my peers, which was convenient but in an odd way depressing and isolating; however, my grades dramatically changed after a lot of personal losses (this is relevant, see below).
How should I deal with discouragement as a graduate student?
It definitely does not mean research isn't for you. Research is hard, and it takes some getting used to. Your experiences sound normal, and it will indeed get better. Part of the problem is that it's tempting to focus too much on the destination: proving theorems, writing papers. These things happen only occasionally, and thinking about them (or their absence) too much is an easy way to become depressed. Instead, you want to reach the point of enjoying the journey itself.
A trivial correction to my currently-under-review paper - What to do?
I have several small corrections to apply to a paper which is currently under review. The errors are - as far as I can say - not very significant. There is a citation which it would be good to include, but maybe is not crucial (I only recently discovered a paper which deals with a somewhat related problem), plus a number of typos that I recently discovered. What is the correct way to proceed?
If transitioning into academic position, should I buy my PhD graduation cap and gown?
As noted in the comment, the location might change our opinion of the problem, however I will make notes from my experience. When I graduated with my first degree I hired a gown as I could not see the value of owning one and knew I would study for higher degrees, and perhaps I could buy one later in my career. I received my second degree in-absentia because I knew that I would graduate again with a third degree in due course.
I graduated last year and my advisor passed away unexpectedly soon after. What should I do now for subsequent academic job searches?
I received a PhD in mathematics last May. Last December, my advisor passed away quite unexpectedly. My advisor was an extraordinary person; in addition to being a fantastic advisor mathematically, he was a wonderful mentor who I always thought of as a friend - this is very much a personal loss for me. My initial emotional response was that I should clearly leave mathematics forever. Rationally, that seems uncalled for. Before all of this, I had been aiming for academic jobs in mathematics.
undergraduate - At what stage in academia are you most like to suffer a mental berakdown? - Academia Stack Exchange
Let's see, just in this week alone I got the news that I have failed four of my midterms (out of five courses in total, the last course doesn't have a midterm), achieving around 40% in each, quite consistent effort across the board. By the way I have around a 3.8 GPA over 4 years of engineering school and I received a letter from the faculty telling me to pull my grade up or consult mental health professional.
