Arvin Joaquin’s Biography

I'm a journalist and editor based in Toronto, Canada.

Growing up in the Philippines, I was exposed to how societal differences affect people and the trajectory of their lives. This has fuelled my desire to share their stories in order to diversify narratives and share cultures.

I believe that effective listening and good conversation are crucial in producing great journalism.

I pursue projects that aim to shed light on underreported issues. For instance, I produced a documentary that looks at the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, a radio documentary on a young person who was affected by the opioid crisis in Ottawa, and a video documentary that looks at the life of a Sixties Scoop survivor and his journey towards healing.

I also produced a podcast that showcases the lives of Gender and Sexual Minority (GSM) newcomers and their access to settlement services and safe spaces in Canada. I believe that great storytelling is humane, thought-provoking, and relatable.

My work has also appeared in The Vancouver Courier, CTV News, Thought Catalog, CKCU FM, CKNW 980, and Global News.
