At a convening of financial institutions, organized by McKinsey and the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures, participants agreed on the urgent need to protect our “natural capital.” Humanity and economic activity fundamentally depend upon “natural capital”—the world’s stock of natural assets, such as forests, rivers, and oceans. Yet, this natural capital is deteriorating at an unprecedented rate.
A new draft framework standardizes how businesses report and act on nature-related risks. Businesses that act fastest can help and benefit the most. It took decades for the world to understand, accept, and begin acting in a coordinated fashion to address the risks of climate change. By contrast, risks associated with nature loss have been less understood and discussed, although nature is degrading at rates outside human experience.
