Estimating the Social Visibility of Abortions in Uganda and Ethiopia Using the Game of Contacts
INTRODUCTION Accurate estimates of the incidence of induced abortion are essential for understanding sexual and reproductive health outcomes in a population. Enumerating the number of induced abortions is necessary to accurately estimate the prevalence of unintended pregnancy. In addition, these estimates can highlight a need for safe abortion services and provide important insights into the use and provision of contraceptives.

Contraceptive Intentions and Use throughout the Extended Postpartum Period: A Panel Study in Ethiopia
BACKGROUND Contraception is a critical means for women and couples to achieve their reproductive goals through spacing or limiting of childbearing. In the postpartum period, contraceptive use can help women attain their desired intervals between pregnancies or prevent additional pregnancies to ensure optimal health for mother and child.
Self-reported abortion experiences in Ethiopia and Uganda, new evidence from cross-sectional community-based surveys
Unsafe abortion is a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. To gain insight into the ways in which abortion restrictions and stigma may shape reproductive health outcomes, we present self-reported data on abortions in Ethiopia and Uganda and compare these findings across the two varying legal contexts.
Identifying gaps and strengthening capacities for abortion research in Ethiopia: Assessment of abortion-research related experiences, skills, and interests
Abstract Collecting accurate and reliable data on abortion is public health imperative, but it is a challenging task that requires specific methods and carefully implemented study designs. This study aimed to assess the institution and individual-level capacity for conducting abortion-related research and identify effective ways to strengthen the capacities of abortion- researchers by filling critical skills and resource gaps.
Impact of the Global Gag Rule on Women’s Contraceptive Use and Reproductive Health Outcomes in Ethiopia: A Pre-Post and Difference-in-Difference Analysis | Guttmacher Institute
Objective: To assess the impacts of the Protecting Life through Global Health Assistance policy (otherwise known as the expanded global gag rule (GGR)) on women’s sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in Ethiopia. The GGR prohibits all non-US non-governmental organisations (NGOs) receiving US Government global health funding from providing, referring or advocating for abortion. Design: Pre–post analysis and difference-in-difference analysis.
Postabortion and Safe Abortion Care Coverage, Capacity, and Caseloads During the Global Gag Rule Policy Period in Ethiopia and Uganda
Background: Abortion-related complications contribute to preventable maternal mortality, accounting for 9.8% of maternal deaths globally, and 15.6% in sub-Saharan Africa. High-quality postabortion care (PAC) can mitigate the negative health outcomes associated with unsafe abortion. While the expanded Global Gag Rule policy did not prohibit the provision of PAC, other research has suggested that over-implementation of the policy has resulted in impacts on these services.
