Softball Season Ends in Hard-Fought Loss to Soquel
The softball team was defeated 10-3 by the Soquel Knights in CCS Division II Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. Despite strategic defensive innings, M-A ultimately could not keep pace with the Knights on the scoreboard. The first inning of the game started slow for the Bears. Junior second baseman Juliana Pandolfo was able to hit a single, and subsequently steal second and third. Still, the offense stalled against Soquel’s notorious pitcher and the inning ended after just four hitters.
Testing Viral Gymrat Dessert Recipes
The fitness world has a protein problem. There's a rising emphasis on making foods with higher protein to make them more "macro-friendly," basically meaning they hit more nutritional targets in the macronutrient categories-proteins, fats, carbohydrates-with fewer calories. As more macro-friendly recipes have made their way to the internet, fitness influencers have found a way to sneak protein powder and cottage cheese into nearly everything.

Across the country, students are preparing to sit in an overly crowded, bright room to take an exam that will determine their college acceptances, personal worth, and entire future. From Knowt practice exams to Khan Academy Review, here are some of the easiest-to-use study tools for AP exams.
Opinion: Make Instagram Casual Again
The modern social media experience for teenagers is a paradox. Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms allow connection like never before, but this connection is facilitated by curated stories, reels, and photos. Recently, Tumblr and the visual aesthetics of 2016 have been trending-a sign of nostalgia for simpler times where posting was carefree. Instagram needs to return to being a digital scrapbook, not a visually aesthetic grid. Social media should be fun.
Nowruz Celebration Brings Rich Tradition to Palo Alto
The Palo Alto City Library hosted its Nowruz New Year Celebration at the Mitchell Park Community Center on Sunday. Participants gathered to watch dance performances from Ballet Afsaneh as well as musical performances from Amir and friends of Amir's School of Music. Nowruz, which translates to "new day" in Farsi, is a celebration of the spring equinox and traces back 3,000 years ago to the symbolic triumph of light over darkness.
Bear Bites: Steam Brings Authentic Dim Sum Flavors to Downtown Palo Alto
Located along Palo Alto's bustling University Avenue is a quaint open-kitchen dim sum restaurant called Steam. Modern wooden interior design brings a warm atmosphere dulled by the constant playing of mall fitting room music. The kitchen delivers a range of flavors, some overly fishy or bland, and some incredibly delicious. Spinach With Garlic: 5/10 ($19) Though aggressively overpriced and a bit bland, this spinach side still serves as a nice accompaniment to the other dishes.
Palo Alto Teen Arts Council's Valentine's Masquerade Ball Unmasks Creativity
The Palo Alto Teen Arts Council hosted its Valentine's Masquerade Ball at the Palo Alto Community Center on Friday to celebrate Valentine's Day. The first official teen dance hosted this year, the event offered live music, refreshments, and creative activities. The theatre was decorated with heart balloons and pink and red ribbons-even featuring a photo booth backdrop for attendees to capture memories of the event.
Complaining Sucks... for Your Brain
"Teenagers are incredibly vulnerable because their prefrontal cortex is behind their emotional system," AP Psychology teacher Jason Knowles said. "Teenagers especially have to be very, very careful about complaining to the point where it's going to literally change their brain, like drugs or alcohol. Getting into a constant negative explanatory style is going to really impact your brain development." Complaining is a daily habit for many people.
Menlo Park City Council Decides to Send Parking Plazas Initiative to Voters
The Menlo Park City Council voted unanimously to place the Downtown Parking Plazas Ordinance initiative on the November ballot on Tuesday evening. The initiative will allow voters to decide whether or not to approve the possible 345 affordable housing units in eight downtown parking lots. If passed, the ballot initiative would also prohibit the city from making most modifications or changes to the use of the parking lots without obtaining voter approval.
Testing the Water (Fountains)
Littered with trash and leaves, M-A's water fountains are notoriously repulsive. Seeking to gauge the cleanliness of the school water fountains, we tested five for bacteria growth. After thoroughly swabbing the mouthpieces of five randomly-selected water fountains, we spread each sample in a petri dish with luria broth agar, a nutrient that feeds bacterial growth. We then incubated each petri dish at 78 degrees for 72 hours, with a desk lamp as a heat source in a dark environment.
Opinion: Vote Yes On Proposition 50
If passed on Nov. 4, Prop 50 would temporarily redraw congressional district maps. As a direct response to gerrymandering in Texas, it will play a key role in protecting Democratic voice in the House of Representatives by gaining five additional seats, balancing out the new Republican seats. It is a vote for democracy, and a vote against Donald Trump.
Satire: Rapture Fails to Materialize, Leaving Many Unfazed
Despite warnings from online prophets and TikTok evangelists, the Rapture scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2025, did not occur. Concerned citizens all over the world braced for the imminent rapture last week, ready to ascend to Heaven while those left behind faced the Final Judgement. However, the would-be doomsday seemingly came and went without any effect on the population. "I was excited because I thought I would be freed from the drudgery of teaching, and then the rapture didn't happen.
