Abstract This study explores the relationship between new female director appointments and managerial ability for a sample of 18,216 US firm-year observations representing 1,885 distinct publicly traded firms. Using a two-stage instrumental variable, we find that new female director appointments are associated with a decrease in managerial ability. This effect is robust to alternative measures, endogeneity corrections, and matched sample approaches.
Drawing from the cognitive appraisal theory of emotions, this study hypothesizes and comparatively tests the effects of empathetic management and cultural intelligence on employee attitudes and behaviours in international business settings. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 257 employees at a major U.S. motor coach company serving international clients (response rate: 59.21%). The asymptotically unbiased PLSF-SEM method was employed to test the theoretical model.
