JASONVILLE – Trevor Miller settled down Monday afternoon, and Shakamak trounced North Central 13-2 in the first semifinal of the Shakamak Baseball Sectional. North Central’s first three batters touched Miller for singles in the bottom of the first. Catcher Blake Chatman singled in one run and a second scored on a wild pitch to give the T-Birds a 2-1 lead.
Lady Vikes blank Bloomfield in Jasper Regional
The Lady Vikings shut out Bloomfield Tuesday night to win the first semifinal of the Jasper Tennis Regional. “To say that the Bloomfield girls’ tennis team got off to a slow start in the opening round of the Jasper Regional would be an understatement,” said coach Mike Canty. “Fifteen minutes after the first serves were hit the Cards were down 3-0 at every position.
2018 Baseball Preview: Area nines eagerly anticipate first pitch
Despite winter’s seeming refusal to go away, Tuesday did in fact mark the first official day of spring. And the arrival of spring means baseball season is just around the corner. Greene County baseball teams and coaches have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. A new season brings with it optimism. Yet every team in the area will have holes to fill and questions to be answered.
T-Birds strike down Warriors
LITTLE CINCINNATI – A wild, fast-paced first half saw the winless North Knox Warriors take a 40-33 halftime lead at homestanding Eastern Greene Saturday night. But the Thunderbirds clamped down on “D” in the second half. Eastern held North Knox to 14 points over the final 16 minutes. And the T-Birds matched North Knox’s first-half point production themselves in the second half. The end result was a resounding 73-54 win as Eastern Greene got back on the winning track, evening its season mark at 2-2.

Eastern celebrates homecoming with rout of Trojans
LITTLE CINCINNATI – Everybody got a piece of the action Friday night as Eastern celebrated homecoming with a romp over visiting Wood Memorial. The 5-0 Thunderbirds, ranked sixth in Class 1A football, held the Trojans to 98 total yards, the same amount Eastern picked up through the air, and six first downs. Eastern head coach Joey Paridaen said the Thunderbirds got every player in the game. “I just thought the boys played hard, played well,” Paridaen said.

Brinegar leads GCO after Day One
Perennial contender Brian Brinegar is the first round leader after day one of the 2017 Greene County Open championship tournament at Phil Harris Golf Course. Brinegar fired an opening-round 66 and holds a one-shot lead over recent Linton-Stockton graduate and sectional champion Zach Hall. Two-time defending champion Clayton French and 2016 first flight winner Jacob Gregory are one stroke back of Hall at 68.
Linton’s Hall wins sectional; Bloomfield’s Ham advances
In one sense it wasn’t a great day for defending sectional champion Linton-Stockton at Monday’s Phil Harris golf sectional. The Miners were unable to repeat as sectional titleist. That honor went to Terre Haute South. The Braves shot a collective score of 310 - six shots better than second-place Northview - to claim the IHSAA sectional championship at Phil Harris Golf Course in Linton. The top three teams advance to Thursday’s regional at Country Oaks Golf Club. But it wasn’t all bad for the Miners.
Miners squeak by Mitchell 2-1
Linton-Stockton squeaked by the Mitchell Bluejackets - barely - winning 2-1 in the Class 2A baseball Sectional 47 opener at Linton’s Roy Herndon Field Thursday. “We made nice plays in the field. But our hitting, we just did not move the baseball very well.” Both Linton runs came in the first two innings. In the first inning Trey Passen singled, stole second and came home on Kip Fougerousse’s RBI single up the middle.
