TURNBULL DOUBLING DOWN ON MEDICARE PRIVATISATION
Malcolm Turnbull isn’t backing off on Medicare privatisation – he’s just getting started. Australians now know he wants to begin tearing down Medicare by selling off the payments system.
MALCOLM CANNOT BE TRUSTED ON MEDICARE
Malcolm Turnbull’s promise to “never, ever” privatise Medicare is as believable as Tony Abbott’s promise before the last election of “no cuts to health”. If Mr Turnbull doesn’t want to privatise Medicare, why have the Liberals set up a 20 person $5 million privatisation taskforce? If Mr Turnbull doesn’t want to privatise Medicare, why is PricewaterhouseCoopers currently being paid to progress the privatisation of Medicare payments?
ACCC ACTION AGAINST MEDIBANK PRIVATE
Today’s allegations that the newly-privatised Medibank Private Limited deliberately deceived its members are deeply concerning. With the Turnbull Government refusing to rule out handing control of the billions of dollars disbursed through the Medicare payments system to private health insurers, claims of any unconscionable conduct in the sector are disturbing.
REFORMING THE AUSTRALIAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
A Shorten Labor Government will establish a permanent Australian Healthcare Reform Commission to assist all levels of government to continuously improve our healthcare system. Within the Commission, Labor will establish a new Centre for Medicare and Healthcare System Innovation. The Centre will develop, trial, evaluate and implement new payment and service delivery models that aim to reduce health expenditure while improving the quality and safety of care.
CHRONIC DISEASE CANNOT BE MANAGED BY CUTTING $2 BILLION FOR GENERAL PRACTICE
Proposals to better manage chronic care are doomed unless the Turnbull Government abandons its more than $2 billion in cuts to general practice. No serious health expert disputes the need for Australia’s health system to better manage patients with chronic conditions and Labor welcomes the proposals of the Primary Health Care Advisory Group review to better manage the care of the one-in-five Australians living with two or more chronic health conditions.
Positive plan to help housing affordability
For most young families in Australia, the dream of purchasing and owning their own home is almost completely out of reach. Working and middle class families are increasingly being priced out of the housing market. Ownership rates for young people aged 25-34 have spiralled downwards in recent years from 60% to 48%. Young people are being forced to take on levels of debt unimaginable just a few decades ago. With first home buyers making up just 1 out of 7 of all home purchases, we have to do better.
UPFRONT GP TAX WILL BREAK THE BANK FOR CANCER PATIENTS
Patients being treated for cancer, and other serious health conditions could be forced to fork out thousands of dollars upfront to pay for MRI, X-Rays, CAT scans and mammograms as a result of Malcolm Turnbull’s latest health cuts. The pre-Christmas Budget decision to rip $650 million out of health by scrapping bulk billing incentives pathology and cutting rebates for scans will see many forced to charge patients for scans and tests that were previously bulk-billed.
TURNBULL HEALTH CUTS DEVASTATING FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH
The Turnbull Government’s pre-Christmas cuts to pathology and diagnostic imaging are set to have a devastating impact on women’s health and must be immediately reversed. The decision to rip $650 million out of Medicare by slashing bulk billing for diagnostic imaging and pathology will hurt patients, by forcing cancer patients, and others with critical health conditions to either pay more or skip vital scans and tests.
BULK BILLING FACTS CONTRADICT MINISTER
A media release on the Minister for Health’s own website has directly contradicted her justification for the Mid-Year Budget decision to scrap bulk billing incentives for pathology and diagnostic imaging. On ABC Radio this morning managed to contradict herself in the one answer attacking Labor’s 2009 bulk billing incentive for pathology and diagnostic imaging: “This was a policy introduced to increase bulk billing and it didn't.
A Strong Voice for People with Disability
What will Labor do? Labor will provide an additional $2 million a year to peak disability advocacy organisations so people with disability have a powerful voice on the issues that matter to them. This funding will give certainty to peak disability advocacy organisations that had their funding slashed by the Liberals just before Christmas last year. It will also support new, start-up organisations to represent the interests of people with increasingly diverse types of disability.
Labor's Plan for a Workplace Response to Domestic Violence
If you or anyone you know needs help, click here for a list of family violence support services. Domestic violence is a national scourge. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics one in six Australian women have experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner. Intimate partner violence is the leading contributor to death, disability and ill-health in Australian women aged 15-44.
MEDICARE SAFETY NET NEEDS REAL REFORM, NOT MORE LIBERAL HEALTH CUTS
Labor will move to protect patients from Malcolm Turnbull’s plans to rip $270 million from the Medicare Safety Net. While Labor would support sensible reform to simplify and improve the Medicare Safety Net, we are concerned this is money being taken from patients and once again, not being put back directly into care for disadvantaged communities.
China FTA Safeguards - Australian Labor Party
Labor will seek to amend the Migration Act 1958 to introduce safeguards around the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement’s provisions on temporary skilled migration. The safeguards will deal with three areas of concern over the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) negotiated by the Coalition Government.
Thank you - Australian Labor Party
We're for a stronger, smarter, and fairer Australia.
Infrastructure - Australian Labor Party
Despite the Australian economy entering its 25th year of continuous expansion, the case for economic reform could not be more pressing. As the height of the mining boom passes, Australia is increasingly exposed to lower economic growth, and declining living standards. Today we are experiencing the longest sustained period of sub-trend growth for more than 50 years[1]. Australia is experiencing rising unemployment, flagging productivity and a decline in standard of living.
Fairer Super Plan
Labor is committed to ensuring the sustainability of the retirement income system in a way that delivers fairness and enables Australians to maintain a comfortable standard of living in retirement. Tax concessions (forgone revenue) are an important part of the superannuation system, as they encourage people to contribute funding and preserve these savings until their own retirement. These tax concessions benefit high income earners and over time will place an increasing burden on the Budget.
No WorkChoices - Australian Labor Party
Malcolm Turnbull has all but confirmed that under his Government the Sunday penalty rates of hard working Australians are under threat. He has refused to immediately rule out the fundamentally unfair proposal to cut the pay of people working in the retail, hospitality and entertainment by up to 37 per cent.
Our Plan - Australian Labor Party
The Digital Age is transforming all aspects of our lives, broadening our horizons and creating limitless potential. This transformation will affect everything - from how we communicate, educate, undertake commerce, even the way we seek medical treatment. It is changing the way we live, the way we work and even the way we engage with government. As with all transformative changes, it presents challenges but also immense opportunities.
Our Initial Investment to Address Family Violence
If you or anyone you know needs help, click here for a list of family violence support services. Labor will make a series of critical investments in services and programs that directly support women and children escaping family violence. Labor’s interim package will deliver more than $70 million over three years in targeted funding to ensure those suffering from family violence can access critical services.
TURNBULL RIGHT HAND MAN A TOBACCO APOLOGIST
Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to appoint Qld LNP Senator James McGrath as his Assistant Minister has placed a tobacco apologist at the heart of his government. Senator McGrath’s promotion comes just days after Senator McGrath denounced the recent hike in the tobacco excise, legislated by Labor but enacted by the Coalition as “cover for fiscal recklessness”. Senator McGrath also denounced Labor’s plain packaging laws, which the coalition supported, as “nanny state laws”.
National Crisis Summit - Australian Labor Party
If you or anyone you know needs help, click here for a list of family violence support services. There is no clearer symbol of continuing gender inequality in our society than the epidemic of violence against women. The biggest risk factor for being a victim of family violence is being a woman. 1 in 3 Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15. That’s not good enough; in fact that is a crisis.

Refugee intake - Australian Labor Party
We should take more refugees, Mr Abbott Everyone who has seen the recent images of asylum seekers fleeing Syria knows we need to do more. Labor's policy is that Australia's refugee intake should be lifted to 27,000 and more resources provided to the UNHCR. Labor has also announced that we should take an additional 10,000 Syrian refugees above the annual intake. We're calling on Tony Abbott to match our policy.
2ND ANNIVERSARY OF TONY ABBOTT MEDICARE LOCALS LIE
Two years ago today Tony Abbott stared down the barrel of a television camera at the Rooty Hill People’s Forum and solemnly promised millions of Australians “we are not shutting any Medicare Locals”. Despite Tony Abbott’s solemn promise none of them would be closed, the Abbott Government abolished all 61 Medicare Locals run and operated by community not-for-profit boards, replacing them with a smaller number of Primary Health Networks.
Climate Change Action Plan
Climate change is an intergenerational challenge that requires an intergenerational response. Our approach to post-2020 pollution reduction targets has followed a clear and logical sequence of decision making: The science on climate change is clear, and is well established. More than 2,000 scientists from over 150 countries that participate in the IPCC process have found the human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent emissions of greenhouse gases are the highest in history.
LEY THREATENS MORE HEALTH PAIN TO PAY FOR BUDGET MISTAKE
The Abbott Government has finally admitted its petty and heartless Budget cut to the subsidy for Australians suffering from debilitating Inborn Error of Metabolism (IEM) conditions was based on wrong information. However, the sting in the tail is that further unspecified cuts to health will be made to pay for the minister’s bungling.
A humane and compassionate approach to asylum seekers
According the UNHCR, the number of displaced people fleeing from war, conflict or persecution is the highest number since World War II. The forced displacement of persons around the globe is currently at unprecedented levels. By the close of 2014 an estimated 59.5 million individuals were forcibly displaced around the globe as a result of persecution, conflict, violence and human rights violations.
Domestic Violence
There is no clearer symbol of continuing gender inequality in our society than the epidemic of violence against women. The biggest risk factor for being a victim of family violence is being a woman. 1 in 3 Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15. That’s not good enough; in fact that is a crisis. Family and domestic violence is an epidemic and it requires a united community approach to end it. You can read more about Labor's policy on domestic and family violence here.
ALP PLAIN PACKAGING LAWS SEND TOBACCO CONSUMPTION TO NEW RECORD LOW
Labor’s world leading plain packaging laws have sent tobacco consumption plunging to yet another record low. The latest ABS National Accounts figures show tobacco consumption fell a further 3.8 per cent in the March quarter. Tobacco consumption has now plunged 10 per cent over the past 12 months, and a staggering 17.5 per cent in the two and a half years since Labor’s plain packaging laws came into effect.
Budget Reply Speech
Bill Shorten delivered his Budget Reply speech on May 15. Read and watch his speech in full below. Tonight I rise to speak on behalf of millions of Australians who feel shocked and angry. Shocked by the brutality of this Government’s attack on their way of life. Angry at a Prime Minister who pretended to be on their side. More importantly, it will divide our nation. The Government says this Budget is just the beginning. And it is.
DENTAL ANNOUNCEMENT A CRUEL HOAX ON PATIENTS
Today’s dental health policy “announcement” by the Health Minister is no more than a cruel hoax, and confirmation of yet another Liberal lie on health. Far from spending $200 million, today’s announcement is confirmation of a $390 million cut to dental health spending contained in last year’s Budget. In his 2013 election health policy, Tony Abbott explicitly committed to funding the Second National Partnership Agreement with the States to shorten adult waiting lists.

GP TAX LIVES ON, MEDICAL JOURNAL OF AUSTRALIA CONFIRMS
The Abbott Government remains committed to a GP Tax, with new research today indicating the tax could rise every year, and be at least $8 within four years. The research, published in the highly respected Medical Journal of Australia finds the Abbott Government’s latest plan to slug patients could lead to even higher charges than the original GP Tax.
UK FOLLOWS LABORS LEAD AS PLAIN PACKAGING SENDS TOBACCO CONSUMPTION PLUNGING TO ALL TIME LOW
Labor’s world leading plain packaging laws have sent tobacco consumption plunging to a new record low, vindicating Britain’s move overnight to follow Australia’s lead. The latest national accounts figures have revealed tobacco consumption fell a further 2.9 per cent in the December quarter. That takes the total fall in tobacco consumption to a staggering 12.8 per cent in the two years since Labor’s plain packaging laws came into effect.
Labor world leading plain packaging laws adopted by Ireland
Labor congratulates Ireland on becoming the first nation to follow Australia’s lead and adopt Labor’s world leading plain packaging laws. The legislation was passed through the Irish Parliament overnight with unanimous support and applause, in a massive endorsement of Australia’s approach to tobacco control. With other European countries also moving to adopt plain packaging laws, Australia has again led the world in ground breaking measures to control smoking.
ABBOTT RIGHT HAND MAN A REPEAT OFFENDER ON GP TAX FIBS
The Prime Minister’s Parliamentary Secretary has now been exposed as a repeat offender on the GP Tax, after being caught out three times in one week wrongly declaring the tax had been “dropped” or “scrapped”. On Friday, Mr Tudge was promoting the dumping of the GP Tax as evidence the prime minister was listening to voters and changing his policies. Alan Tudge: you're seeing that for example already with the GP co-payment. That's been scrapped.
GOVERNMENT ON NOTICE ON DROP IN ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION
The drop in organ and tissue donation rates in 2014 is a deeply concerning development that demands the Abbott Government’s immediate attention. National reforms introduced by Labor in 2009 saw organ and tissue donation rates increase by almost 40 per cent in less than five years.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT ADMITS GP TAX NOT BACKED BY EVIDENCE
The Department of Health has admitted the Abbott Government’s GP Tax is not backed by any substantive research. The damning admission came from senior Department officials at the Senate Select Committee on Health in Canberra “I’m unaware of any substantive work in Australia specifically about the impact of something like [the] Medicare co-payment and reduction in rebate,” the department’s acting deputy secretary told the inquiry.
CORMANN CONFIRMS ABBOTT AGENDA TO END UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE
Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has confirmed the Abbott Government is preparing to wreck Medicare by ending universal access to health care. Speers: Could that be through means-testing bulk-billing? Cormann: Well, it’s about.. currently the Health Minister is conducting consultations with the AMA and other stakeholders.

Climate Change Debate: Bill Shorten
Today Bill Shorten spoke against the carbon tax repeal bill. Watch and read his full speech below. In late 2009, this nation was on the verge of making a decision about which we could have been collectively proud. We could have made this parliament a place of inspiration. A national response to climate change supported by Government and Opposition.
ABBOTT DROPS HEALTH MINISTER NOW TIME TO DROP GP TAX
Tony Abbott has acknowledged the complete failure of his government’s record on health by removing his minister for health. However, his new minister will be just as much a failure as her predecessor if she does not immediately dump the disastrous GP Tax. Minister Ley has been handed a poisoned chalice by her predecessor with the medical profession in open revolt at the Government’s litany of deceit and lies on health and a minister who had shut his door to the health sector.
