How I Won NaNoWriMo in Nine Days
So this is my NaNoWriMo word count progress chart from the last time I participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in 2013: Or at least, that’s what it was on the Saturday after I hit 50,000 words. So statistics! We like statistics. Here’s how my nine-day breakdown went: Day 1: 5,731 words written, 5,731 total. Day 2: 7,724 words written, 13,455 total. Day 3: 5,150 words written, 18,605 total. Day 4: 5,145 words written, 23,620 total. Day 5: 5,130 words written, 28,750 total.
Are Your Characters Too Passive?
So one of the critiques I’ve received a few times on WIPs I’ve been revising this year is centered on my characters. Specifically, characters who aren’t active enough. Now, by “not active enough” I don’t mean that they didn’t exercise enough (though I mean, that might be the case too, but anyway). When you get the critique that your characters are too passive, it usually means they’re being reactive far too often.
Vlog: Young Adult vs. New Adult
Categories can be confusing, so today I'm talking about the difference between two I see confused the most: Young Adult and New Adult. How to Turn an Idea into a Plot
Photo credit: faungg on FlickrNote: Quick announcement! The winner of the Trish Doller prize package is Victoria Gender! Woot! Congratulations, Victoria! Now onto the post... So it was brought to my attention that I’ve written frighteningly little on brainstorming and my brainstorming process, and I suspect that’s probably because my process is fairly nebulous and can vary depending on the book. That said, I’m going to try to explain the best I can anyway. So you have some kind of idea.
Scrivener’s Version of Track Changes
Remember that time I said that I didn’t know if Scrivener had a track changes feature, but I suspected it probably did and I hadn’t found it yet and my Scrivener n00bness was showing? Well, I was right—Scrivener does have a track changes feature. Or at least, it has it’s own version of it, and I happen to have fallen in love with it.
Rejection Doesn’t Stop
NOTE: Don't forget, you have until Tuesday, March 24 at 11:59PM to enter for a chance to win a first 250 critique featured on Writability! Some tough love today. Every once in a while, I’ll get an e-mail from writers who say they’re having trouble with rejection, or scared of rejection, or getting tired of rejection, etc. These are feelings, I think, that just about every writer can identify with. After all, rejection is never easy to handle, especially over and over and over again.
