Two Pair: How to Play this Challenging Hand in Hold’em
Raise your hand if you’ve ever flopped Two Pair and lost to a bigger Two Pair! See all the hands going up? And when it happens, you often lose a big pot, especially on a dry board. Your negative implied odds are even worse when you hit your boat. Bottom pair turns into a weak boat, and you can lose your stack to a bigger full house. Another big problem occurs when the card you do not hold pairs on the turn or river. Now you are reduced to one pair not on the board and possibly a weak kicker.

Ask me what is the most essential consideration when playing a hand in a cash game? I would say it’s not position or my cards or my opponents. It’s my stack size relative to the blinds. Consider a hand like the one below in a deep stack game with effective stacks (the smallest of the stacks involved in a hand) of 400 big blinds. How much are you likely to lose with this hand?

Big drawing hands can be tricky to play out of position. So, I’m using a real-life example to break it down. I’ll express and explain what I was thinking throughout to use as a teaching aid. Let’s dissect a hand I played last year at 2-5 at Maryland Live! in Baltimore. You may not agree with the way I played this hand, nor with my reasoning. But that is the beauty of poker.
